Position: Tunnel Facilities Trades Worker I (Apprentice Level)

Pay and Housing

Base pay for this position is typically between $1956-$2151/biweekly ($50,856-$55,926/annually
). This location is also eligible for an additional $2000/month housing stipend, resulting in total pay of $74,856-$79,926/annually. The minimum annualized hourly rate for this position is $24.45/hour (corresponding to $1956/biweekly).

In addition, a 20% shift differential is paid for weekend shifts (anytime between 4:00pm Friday through 6:00am Monday) and a 14% shift differential is paid when half or more of the scheduled hours fall between 11:00pm and 6:00am Monday through Friday.

There is the option of living in CDOT-owned housing in Frisco, subject to unit availability.

About CDOT and the Tunnel Facilities Trade Worker I Position

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is responsible for operating and maintaining the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT). The Special Crew Unit maintains and repairs the tunnel’s electrical and mechanical equipment, including high voltage systems, generators, control systems, lighting, and ventilation motors. It also responds to emergencies such as stalled vehicles, fires, and power outages.

The Tunnel Facilities Trade Worker I assists with electrical, mechanical, and plumbing work on the tunnel’s systems. Duties include installing, repairing, and maintaining heating, ventilation, drainage, motor, and electrical systems, operating heavy equipment, and supporting emergency response.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in maintaining, installing, repairing, and adjusting building heating systems, including hydronic, forced air, gas-fired boiler, electrical baseboard, and gas-fired radiant bay heaters.
  • Under direction of a licensed electrician, assist in performing electrical services on equipment within the tunnel structure, such as substations, generators, control systems, transformers, and lighting.
  • Assist in maintaining, installing, repairing, and adjusting water, sewage, potable water distribution, and fire protection distribution systems.
  • Assist in maintaining and operating 56 dual speed motors ranging from 12.5 to 600 horsepower and 28 ventilation fans with 500 CFM capacity.
  • Safely drive and operate a variety of equipment, including tandem truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, sweeper, wrecker, pumper/rescue truck, and forklift.
  • Respond to tunnel and area vehicle fires using firefighting equipment and PPE.
  • Participate in maintenance projects, inspect contractor work, and test installed equipment.
  • Complete work orders and prepare documents for cost estimates, materials, and parts inventories.
  • Attend safety meetings and training on fire response and hazardous material handling.
  • Maintain constant awareness of hazards and perform daily safety checks.
  • Assist with snow plowing and traffic control during winter/snow events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment
  • Schedule for Crew B: 5:00pm – 5:30am Sunday & Monday (12 hours); 9:00pm – 5:30am Tuesday & Wednesday (8 hours).
  • Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gasses, dusts, and transformers oils.
  • Work at extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather, and elevations up to 12,000 feet.
  • Work in close proximity to heavy traffic, small enclosed spaces, using ladders and scissor lifts for heights of 10–20 feet.
  • Use of CDOT vehicles; required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no air‑brake restriction within 6 months of hire.
  • On-call and overtime may be required; winter/snow events may call for plowing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 2 years of experience with a primary focus in electrical, HVAC, machinist, plumbing, or related trades.
