Stormwater Systems Technician

The City of Greeley is seeking qualified candidates to join the Stormwater Division as a Stormwater Systems Technician I or II. This position is responsible for maintaining, repairing, inspecting, and constructing the City's stormwater infrastructure to protect public health, property, and the environment while ensuring the safe and efficient conveyance of stormwater throughout the community.

Stormwater Systems Technicians inspect, maintain, and repair storm sewer systems, culverts, inlets, manholes, detention ponds, drainage channels, and other stormwater facilities. This position operates a variety of equipment, performs emergency flood response, supports regulatory compliance, supports city wide snow and ice removal, and works collaboratively to maintain critical public infrastructure.

Candidates may be hired at the Technician I or Technician II level depending on qualifications, experience, certifications, and competencies demonstrated.

The Stormwater Systems Technician classification provides a structured career path that supports employee development through increased technical proficiency. Advancement from Technician I to Technician IV is based on demonstrated performance, experience, and certifications.

Stormwater Systems Technician I

Position Summary:

The Stormwater Systems Technician I is an entry-level responsible for assisting in the inspection, maintenance, repair, and construction of the City's stormwater infrastructure. Under the direction of a Crew Supervisor and senior staff, the Technician I performs routine maintenance, operates light- and medium-duty equipment, assists with emergency response activities, and develops the technical knowledge, certifications, and equipment operation skills necessary to advance within the Stormwater Operations.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license.
  • One (1) year of experience in construction, public works, utilities, stormwater, streets, landscaping, excavation, or related field maintenance.
  • Colorado Collections System Operator Class I Certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Flagger Certification and Work Zone Traffic Control Certification within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience operating light construction or maintenance equipment.
  • Experience performing municipal infrastructure or utility maintenance.
  • Experience working in outdoor construction or public works environments.

Stormwater Systems Technician II

Position Summary:

The Stormwater Systems Technician II is responsible for independently performing maintenance, repair, inspection, and construction of the City's stormwater infrastructure. This position operates heavy equipment, performs advanced maintenance activities, troubleshoots field issues, provides technical guidance to less experienced employees, and may serve as a lead on assigned projects or maintenance activities.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license.
  • Three (3) years of experience in stormwater, drainage, utility, construction, operating heavy equipment including loaders, excavators, backhoes, skid steers, dump trucks, tractors, or similar equipment or related infrastructure maintenance.
  • Current Class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Flagger Certification and Work Zone Traffic Control Certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Colorado Collections System Operator Class I Certification
  • Colorado Collections System Operator Class II Certification within twelve (12) months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using GIS, City Works, or computerized maintenance management systems.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, and safe work practices used in stormwater system maintenance, construction, and repair.
