Education & Experience (Required)- Good standing with an accredited university, enrolled in a Master of Social Work program
- Completed graduate coursework in school social work
- Successful completion of required trainings provided by District 6
- Orientation to Sources of Strength program
- Knowledge of school systems and diverse populations
- Willingness to engage students and support peer‑led initiatives
- Experience working with students in an educational or residential setting
- Experience designing and implementing social, emotional, and behavioral interventions for students
- Experience with Social Emotional Learning
Summary/Objective: The Social Work Intern provides therapeutic services to support the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students in District
6. Students receive individual, group, and family interventions and may receive assistance with risk/threat assessments, safety planning, and crisis response. Interns collaborate with outside agencies and serve on district wide teams including Behavior Support, MTSS, Equity, and Crisis Teams.
Supervision is provided in accordance with university internship guidelines.
Essential Functions- Support schools in building and sustaining the peer‑led Sources of Strength program.
- Conduct individual and group counseling activities to facilitate personal, social, emotional, and academic growth.
- Collaborate with school psychologists, mental health providers, speech‑language pathologists, and teachers when co‑treating.
- Participate in behavior, academic, and social/emotional interventions and consultation.
- Assist students who are dysregulated to develop coping strategies and return to class promptly.
- Observe and evaluate children with social/emotional and behavioral difficulties for functional behavioral assessments and behavior intervention plans.
- Participate as a member of IEP teams and other support teams, recommending intervention strategies to achieve optimal educational progress.
- Connect families to external resources such as psychiatric, psychological, counseling, or other treatment services.
- Collaborate with external mental health providers, social welfare agencies, and juvenile probation officers to address student needs.
- Respond to crisis situations and assist in de‑escalation, risk/threat assessment, and safety planning.
- Work with the District 6 equity team to examine race and culture dynamics within the system.
- Implement the five core competencies of Social Emotional Learning through curriculum and/or practices with students and staff.
- Assist with in‑service training of school personnel as needed.
- Assist with program development and evaluation as available.
- Attend weekly individual supervision with the assigned mentor School Social Worker.

- Knowledge of current best practices in school‑based prevention and early intervention for students with learning disabilities, mental health, or social/emotional needs.

- Skill in data gathering and analysis.
- Strong organization, planning, and time‑management skills.
- Ability to drive between sites (reimbursement not provided).
- Ability to complete all required internship hours within the dates required by the university.
- Adherence to District 6 policy and procedure.

Work Environment / Physical DemandsAbility to sit for long periods, manage numerous distractions, and maintain visual, auditory, and ambulatory acuity. Occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds.
