Highway Maintenance Specialist – Monarch Pass, CO

CDOT is looking for a Highway Maintenance Specialist with a Colorado Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License who is passionate about safety, travel, and hands‑on repair and improvements. The position provides a total annual compensation of $59,400, including a $6,000 housing stipend.

What You Will Do

No two days are the same. Your daily work varies by project, weather, and road conditions. You will be on call on a rotating basis and respond to weather and other emergencies. Typical duties include:

  • Plowing snow
  • Operating heavy equipment (tandem dump truck, loader, tractor mower, etc.)
  • Mowing grass and weeds
  • Removing debris from roadways, culverts, and tunnels
  • Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
  • Digging ditches
  • Installing and repairing guardrails, highway markers, signs, warning signs, and lighting
  • Filling potholes and roadway cracks
  • Setting out signs and cones for traffic control
  • Removing and covering graffiti
  • Installing pavement markings/striping
  • Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations
  • Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs
  • Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment

Your Work Environment
  • Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gases, dust that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin
  • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment required
  • Work with chemicals, cleaning products, and sometimes respirators
  • Work near traffic, occasionally high‑speed traffic
  • Use ladders and scissor lifts up to 20 feet
  • Drive CDOT vehicles
  • Frequent emergency response outside regular hours; may work overtime including weekends and holidays
  • Physically able to work in extreme temperatures and at elevations up to 12,000 feet
Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • Two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes
  • Pass pre‑employment screening (social security number trace, criminal records check, educational records, driving records)
  • Potential drug test and DOT physical
  • On‑call and shift work, including emergencies
  • Must be willing to live within 30 minutes driving time to report for work

Conditions of Employment
  • Transfer of non‑Colorado CDL if relocating
  • Pass controlled substance test and DOT physical
  • On‑call work and shift work
  • Required to report promptly for essential services
  • May need to live within 30 minutes travel time to respond
  • Must complete 2‑week training for new employees, 1‑week annually for veteran employees
  • May require Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year
  • Provide emergency contact phone number to supervisor
