The Maker Hub Manager at Georgetown University provides leadership for the Maker Hub, a creative space connecting Georgetown researchers, makers, and entrepreneurs with specialized equipment and a collaborative environment to design, solve problems, and innovate. The role charts the Maker Hub's direction and oversees daily operations by coordinating instructional activities, supervising student staff, and designing policies, procedures, and a community culture that ensures a safe, organized, and productive environment.
This position supports individual students and interdisciplinary teams working on independent projects and course assignments, and collaborates with faculty to design course assignments that utilize the Maker Hub and enhance classroom-learning experiences through experiential learning.
The role inspires discovery and experimentation, connecting Georgetown’s art, technology, and business communities with new models of innovation in an environment where they can work together to solve problems and learn from each other. A critical aspect involves collaboration with makers from all areas of the University, including academic units, student groups, and individual faculty, students, and staff.
Responsibilities- Chart the direction of the Maker Hub and oversee daily operations by coordinating instructional activities.
- Supervise a team of student staff and design policies, procedures, and a community culture that ensures a safe, organized, and productive environment.
- Provide support to individual students and interdisciplinary teams working on independent projects and course assignments.
- Collaborate with faculty to design course assignments that utilize the Maker Hub and enhance classroom-learning experiences through experiential learning.
- Inspire discovery and experimentation and connect Georgetown’s communities with new models of innovation; work with makers from all areas of the University, including academic units, student groups, and staff.
The Maker Hub Manager reports to the Head of the Digital Scholarship Services Unit and collaborates with other Digital Scholarship Services Unit staff to provide complementary services. Daily interactions with students, faculty, and staff include one-on-one consultations, group workshops, and other specialized training. The role also involves recruiting and supervising a community of student workers and volunteers trained to teach visitors how to use equipment, promote hands-on learning, and ensure safe operation.
Regular coordination with campus partners such as Georgetown Entrepreneurship, the Center for Social Justice, and other departments is required, as well as coordinating with vendors for hardware and software needs and with faculty to integrate Maker activities into curriculum.
- Bachelor"s degree and at least 5 years of experience working in a Makerspace or organization that connects art, technology, and business communities
- Portfolio of creatively fabricated projects demonstrating expertise with a variety of tools
- Experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Google Sheets) for budgets and inventories
- Expertise, or ability to develop expertise, with Maker Hub equipment (3D printers, laser cutters, sewing/embroidery machines, vinyl cutters, microcontrollers and electronics, woodworking tools, bookbinding and printmaking tools)
- Evidence of experimentation with traditional tools and emerging technologies
- Experience developing and leading new initiatives involving multiple stakeholders
- Ability to work independently and with diverse teams
- Exceptional customer service and ability to teach both students and faculty
- Strong attention to detail and excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills
- Ability to adapt to periods of increased workflow and varying responsibilities in a complex, changing environment
- Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, students, and staff
