The Department of Public Works is seeking Seasonal Engineering Aides to work with our engineering team, assisting with various projects throughout the summer. Responsibilities Construction & Traffic Engineering Aides- Assists Engineer Technician on engineering surveys by serving as a road person or chain person, and by performing other manual tasks such as driving stakes, clearing brush from survey lines and searching for survey monuments as directed.
- May use transit or level in simple operations.
- Makes manual traffic counts at specified locations.
- Performs basic, manual and CAD drafting assignments and other office work as directed.
- May assist in the inspection of routine Public Works construction projects.
- Hours:
Monday - Thursday 7:00AM - 4:30PM, Friday 7:30AM- 11:30AM - Work schedules for Traffic Engineering Aides may be adjusted between the hours of 7:00 a.m.
- 7:00 p.m. depending on the traffic counting needs of the department.
- Assists with conducting and documenting the inspection of erosion control practices at construction sites.
- Assists with conducting and documenting inspections of stormwater facilities (e.g. stormwater ponds, outfalls, biofilters).
- Assists with conducting sampling of stormwater at outfalls and investigating potential illicit discharges.
- Utilizes GIS for tracking and recording inspections.
- Organizes, reviews, and follows-up on documentation pertaining to the implementation of stormwater management plans.
- Analyzes existing data using spreadsheets, GIS, and other resources to update impervious surface records.
- Hours:
Monday - Thursday 7:30AM - 5:00PM, Friday 7:30AM- 11:30AM
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Enrolled in relevant postsecondary education program such as Civil Engineering or Environmental Science.
- Valid driver's license and good driving record.
- A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.
- Some knowledge of surveying instruments and methods.
- Good communication skills including ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions quickly and accurately.
- Skill and ability to organize work and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to perform manual labor under varying weather conditions.
- Considerable ability to learn quickly and perform tasks accurately.
- Basic computer skills with knowledge and experience with word processing, CAD, and GIS being desirable.
- May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.
