Job Requirements
Plans, organizes, directs, and monitors operations for preservation and maintenance of the Public Land Survey System corners and survey records in Brown County. Acts as the County Surveyor as defined in State Statute 59.45.
- Assist in planning and administering the annual budget for the Survey division.
- Hire, supervise, plan, coordinate, and assign the work of others within the Survey division.
- Direct and supervise all field personnel; provide guidance, leadership, and assistance to the Survey Crew Chief in performing field and office operations that perpetuate land corners and file, index, and preserve land records.
- Preserve and maintain all corners of the Public Land Survey System; analyze and break down the Sectionalized Land System.
- Research government notes, plats, and prior survey records to locate government corners.
- Prepare a Certified Land Corner Report, state facts, evidence, and conditions; sign and seal completed reports.
- Remove, preserve, and replace survey monuments encountered during construction activities.
- Coordinate with State Department of Transportation, County Highway Department, and local road construction companies regarding removal and replacement of corners and witness monuments throughout Brown County.
- Coordinate with County Highway Department personnel for excavation of survey corners, depending on the road system being worked on.
- Evaluate field survey and office procedures to improve efficiencies.
- Research new technology applications for survey field equipment and computer software.
- Create computerized maps of land in Brown County.
- Draft, coordinate, and administer contracts between Brown County and area land surveyors.
- Serve as a member of the Land Information Council; review preliminary certified survey maps and subdivision plats for compliance with state statutes and County Code.
- Work with submitting surveyors to address deficiencies.
- Convert CAD data to be imported into the county GIS.
- Conduct field survey work as needed; index, file, maintain and plot surveys and records related to the Public Land Survey System or any other land boundary within Brown County.
- Assist the public and professional customers in locating and copying survey and land information records; create custom maps and datasets for internal and external customers.
- Research necessary information in the Property Listing and Register of Deeds departments to maintain and perpetuate monuments of the Public Land Survey System.
- Perform field investigations and surveys to support the creation and maintenance of digital base mapping and parcel mapping.
- Perform mathematical computations concerning survey measurements and land records, including statistical data on the accuracy of recorded survey information.
- Recover the original positions of corners of the Public Land Survey System using personal computers and relevant software.
- Confuse with and counsel subordinate staff to exchange information and explain work policies, procedures, and guidelines; identify work‑related problems and formulate possible solutions.
- Review and compare work performance and/or products of subordinate staff with established standards to determine employee production levels, training needs, and recommend and approve employee selection, promotions, discipline, salary increases, separations, and grievance dispositions.
- Provide land survey information and quality control for the county land information database; advise and provide recommendations to state agencies, counties, municipalities, Indian Tribes, other surveyors, attorneys, real estate brokers, abstractors, and others interested in land boundaries regarding surveys, documents, and monuments.
- Consult with County management, officials, and department heads regarding surveying matters; perform land surveys for Brown County and other government agencies.
- Make and record field observations, analyze measurements, compute locations of monuments, and record field observations.
- Map Public Land Survey System information into the digital countywide base map; enter deed, map, plans and other records into the digital tax parcel map.
