Job Description & How to Apply Below

Sure-Fire | Based in Horicon, WI (Travel to Jackson, WI office / Hybrid)

About Sure-Fire

Founded in 1947, Sure-Fire is a third-generation, family-owned S-Corporation dedicated to providing top-tier Residential and Commercial HVAC sales, service, and installation. We currently operate under two primary brands:
Sure-Fire, headquartered in Horicon, WI, which handles both long-cycle commercial construction projects and residential work; and the recently acquired Jackson Hardware Heating & AC (January 2024) in Jackson, WI, which is focused exclusively on residential service and replacement.

As we look toward the future, the current ownership team is seeking a strategic leader who excels in financial planning, analysis, and risk management to help us manage these distinct operations for maximum profitability and operational excellence.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a hands-on, strategic business leader to join us as our Director of Business Operations & Finance.

This is a "business partner" role, not a back-office accounting position. As a relatively small business, we pride ourselves on being agile and lean, which means everyone on our team wears multiple hats— including hats they’ve never worn before. We need someone to oversee our professional financial practices while becoming deeply involved in our daily operations, process improvement, and high-level decision-making.

You will be instrumental in formalizing the systems and operational wisdom previously maintained by our retiring leadership. If you thrive in an environment where you can tackle new challenges and turn financial data into actionable strategy, we want to talk to you.

Key Responsibilities Finance & Accounting Oversight
  • Financial Integrity & Cash Management: Own all financial activities, including general ledger, payroll, billing, and financial statement and S-Corp tax preparation. Closely manage and project cash flow to support operational needs and capital investments.
  • Project & Construction Accounting: Manage job costing, revenue recognition (Percentage-of-Completion), progress billing, and detailed project profitability reporting for our commercial construction division.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead the annual budgeting process and develop robust rolling forecasts to guide strategic decision-making across both brands.
  • Controls & Reporting: Maintain professional financial controls and policies to ensure GAAP compliance.
  • Analysis: Provide timely financial reporting and performance analysis, including detailed divisional and profit center P&Ls comparing Residential Service, Replacement, and Commercial Construction.
Operations & Business Strategy
  • Strategic Planning: Serve as a key advisor to the owners on expansion, capital expenditures, pricing, and long-term growth.
  • Process Optimization: Work with department heads to analyze and improve operational workflows (service delivery, inventory, logistics) to drive bottom-line impact.
  • Leadership: Mentor and guide our existing accounting and administrative staff, instilling a culture of financial awareness and operational excellence across both locations.
  • Systems Management: Evaluate and improve our financial/ERP systems to support our multi-brand structure.
Qualifications
  • Experience: 5+ years in a senior finance or operations leadership role, ideally within construction, contracting, or project-based service environments.
  • Credentials:
CPA and/or MBA preferred to ensure professional oversight of all financial and tax practices.
  • Construction Expertise: Deep knowledge of construction accounting principles, including job costing and managing Work-in-Progress (WIP).
  • Mindset: A hands-on operator who understands that financial success is built through operational efficiency.
  • Leadership: Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex financial concepts into clear operational goals for the team.
What We Offer

A chance to shape the future of a successful, family-run business with a 75-year legacy. You will have a direct impact on our profitability and culture. We offer a competitive salary, performance-based bonus structure, profit-sharing, and comprehensive health benefits.
