Michael Best Strategies is seeking a Senior Accountant to join our team in the Waukesha office
. This role works closely with the Strategies Director of Finance and Operations and the Firm’s Finance & Accounting Department to support accounting, financial reporting, and compliance activities related to government affairs, lobbying, and public sector engagements. The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring accurate financial tracking, timely reporting, and adherence to applicable state and federal regulatory requirements.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Review, process, and record financial transactions related to government relations activities, including expenses, invoices, reimbursements, and payments.
  • Monitor, reconcile, and maintain accounts associated with budgets, retainers, and client billings to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Monitor and analyze revenue, invoices, and receipts, comparing actuals to budget and revising forecasts to support accurate financial planning.
  • Review and analyze expense data to ensure proper classification and compliance with internal policies and applicable regulations.
  • Assist with the month end close process through coordination with the Director of Finance and Operations and cross-functional staff.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements with comparisons to budget and prior year results.
  • Prepare routine and ad hoc financial reports summarizing and forecasting business activity, income, expenses, and financial position.
  • Support the annual budgeting process by collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data and maintaining budget schedules.
  • Maintain organized and accurate financial records and supporting documentation for audits, inquiries, and reporting requirements.
  • Assist with special projects and process improvement initiatives related to financial reporting, compliance, internal requests, and system enhancements.
  • Perform additional accounting and finance related duties as assigned.
Bring Your Best Knowledge Base & Education
  • 3+ years of accounting or finance experience, preferably in a professional services, legal, or regulated environment
  • Excellent analytical and reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills required.
  • Must be able to tactfully deal with conflict and confidential information.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (preferred)
  • Proficiency in Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft Office applications
Accounting & Compliance Skills
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Experience with account reconciliations and financial reporting
  • Familiarity with compliance-driven accounting or regulatory reporting (preferred)
  • Ability to learn and apply evolving regulations and reporting requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment
  • Comfortable working independently while collaborating with cross‑functional teams
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with attorneys, government relations professionals, and staff
  • Willingness to communicate opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies

  • Ability to explain financial information clearly to non‑finance stakeholders
  • Demonstrated discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information
