Trillium Staffing is seeking an experienced Controller for a direct hire opportunity in the public sector.

Schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Salary Range: $105,000 – $115,000 annually. There is an opportunity for hybrid work after six months.

This role is responsible for overseeing financial operations including accounting, accounts payable, financial reporting, and budget management. The Controller plays a key leadership role in ensuring financial accuracy, compliance with accounting standards, and strategic financial planning across the organization.

This position works closely with executive leadership and department managers to analyze financial performance, forecast financial outcomes, and provide guidance on financial policies and decisions. This organization is open to relocation for the right candidate.

The Controller directs and supervises financial functions including accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and debt administration. This role ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as well as applicable financial regulations and internal policies.

The position also provides financial analysis and recommendations to leadership to support sound financial decision-making and long-term fiscal planning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Administration & Reporting
  • Supervise and manage finance staff including planning, scheduling, and assigning work related to general ledger preparation, accounts payable, and budgeting.
  • Provide guidance and training to employees on accounting practices, policies, and financial systems.
  • Ensure financial reporting complies with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain consistent organizational policies related to financial procedures, accounting methods, fiscal reporting, and budgeting processes.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of financial reporting systems.
  • Direct preparation of financial reports including revenue, expenditure, asset, and liability analyses.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Support department leaders by providing financial guidance and recommendations related to fiscal policies and programs.
  • Coordinate annual financial audits, review draft audit reports, respond to findings, and oversee corrective actions as needed.
  • Develop and maintain long-term financial and debt management plans to support capital improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct financial impact analyses on contracts, leases, and strategic initiatives.
  • Budget Monitoring & Reporting
  • Monitor departmental budgets to ensure alignment with approved financial plans and policies.
  • Develop financial monitoring reports for leadership review.
  • Identify potential budget risks including revenue shortfalls or cost overruns.
  • Assist departments with budget transfers and financial adjustments when necessary.
  • Review budget transfers to ensure compliance with internal financial policies.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to understand operational financial needs and monitor revenue and expenditure trends.
  • Budget Development & Financial Planning
  • Assist with development of the annual organizational budget including timelines, budget templates, and guidance for departments.
  • Review departmental budgets for accuracy and consistency.
  • Prepare financial projections and long-term fiscal forecasts.
  • Analyze revenue estimates and expenditure projections to support realistic budgeting.
  • Assist with development of financial policies including fund balance targets, tax considerations, and long-term debt strategies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Government accounting experience is required, CPA designation is preferred, but not required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible accounting experience including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting practices.
