Job Summary
This seasonal position supports airport operations through grounds and facility maintenance essential to safety and appearance. The role is field-based and involves independent outdoor work, equipment operation, and communication with airfield personnel to ensure operations continue without disruption or hazard.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Technical Proficiency:
Operates heavy and light equipment, including tractors with attachments, safely and effectively. - Situational Awareness:
Maintains high vigilance while working near active runways and taxiways; uses radio monitoring to adjust work in response to aircraft movements. - Problem Solving:
Identifies mechanical issues and performs minor repairs or escalates as necessary to maintain operational continuity. - Physical Stamina:
Performs sustained physical tasks outdoors in varied weather conditions with appropriate safety measures. - Communication:
Interacts respectfully and effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and members of the public; understands and responds to verbal instructions and radio alerts.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- At least one (1) year of work experience in groundskeeping, maintenance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Work Environment Requirements
Work is primarily conducted outdoors (approximately 95%) in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and light rain. Duties involve regular use of riding mowers, tractors, push mowers, and manual tools, requiring frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting (up to 50 pounds), and equipment handling. Employees may be exposed to dust, loud noises, and moving machinery. Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as ear plugs, eye protection, and dust masks must be worn during designated tasks.
Operations occur near active airfields, requiring constant alertness and use of two-way radios to track aircraft location and ensure safe movement within designated zones.
In an effort to provide for continuity of County government and to cope with the problems of the emergency, you may be required to work during a proclaimed state of emergency, consistent with Sec. 323.14, Wis. Stats. and County emergency management plans and programs.
