Job Summary

This seasonal position supports airport operations through grounds and facility maintenance essential to safety and appearance. The role is field-based and involves independent outdoor work, equipment operation, and communication with airfield personnel to ensure operations continue without disruption or hazard.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Operates tractors, mowers, and related equipment to cut grass around runways, taxiways, and airport buildings in accordance with aviation safety protocols.
  • Maintains grounds through seeding, fertilizing, painting, trimming, fence repair, and other landscaping tasks to ensure a clean and operational environment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment, including oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, belt and tire checks, and cleaning to ensure reliability and compliance with safety standards.
  • Conducts minor building maintenance tasks and repairs as assigned to maintain facility integrity.
  • Operates power tools and hand tools for various groundskeeping and maintenance activities.
  • Uses trimming tools to clear brush and maintain safe visibility and clearance around the airfield.
  • Follows airport safety protocols, including monitoring airfield radio communications to remain aware of aircraft locations and activity during maintenance operations.
  • Complies with County work attire and personal protective equipment policies, including wearing ear protection, eye protection, dust masks, and visibility clothing as appropriate.
  • Key Competencies & Skills
    • Technical Proficiency:
      Operates heavy and light equipment, including tractors with attachments, safely and effectively.
    • Situational Awareness:
      Maintains high vigilance while working near active runways and taxiways; uses radio monitoring to adjust work in response to aircraft movements.
    • Problem Solving:
      Identifies mechanical issues and performs minor repairs or escalates as necessary to maintain operational continuity.
    • Physical Stamina:
      Performs sustained physical tasks outdoors in varied weather conditions with appropriate safety measures.
    • Communication:
      Interacts respectfully and effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and members of the public; understands and responds to verbal instructions and radio alerts.
    Required Education & Experience
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Valid driver’s license.
    Preferred Education & Experience
    • At least one (1) year of work experience in groundskeeping, maintenance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Work Environment Requirements

    Work is primarily conducted outdoors (approximately 95%) in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and light rain. Duties involve regular use of riding mowers, tractors, push mowers, and manual tools, requiring frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting (up to 50 pounds), and equipment handling. Employees may be exposed to dust, loud noises, and moving machinery. Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as ear plugs, eye protection, and dust masks must be worn during designated tasks.

    Operations occur near active airfields, requiring constant alertness and use of two-way radios to track aircraft location and ensure safe movement within designated zones.
