Position: Research Technician (Firefighter)

About the Role

Research Technician, Firefighter supports both live fire suppression testing and critical safety and compliance programs within our R&D fire lab. This role combines technical fire lab support with EHS technician responsibilities, including hazardous materials handling and regulatory compliance. Ideal candidates are Certified firefighter with a strong safety mindset, mechanical aptitude, and a solid understanding of fire lab and EHS protocols.

Responsibilities

Fire Test Support & Operations

  • Sets up fire test equipment such as fire pans and sprinkler grids in accordance with approved test plans.
  • Conducts live fire suppression tests, including ignition, agent application, and extinguishment procedures.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Firefighter Level I (or higher) certifications and established safety protocols.
  • Ensures real-time, accurate data collection using a tablet-based system.

Hardware Testing & Data Recording

  • Supports hardware testing activities, ensuring precise setup and reliable data capture.
  • Enter and maintain detailed testing records in digital formats.

Laboratory & Equipment Maintenance

  • Maintains a clean, organized, and fully functional fire test lab environment.
  • Conducts routine maintenance on test fixtures and lab equipment to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Monitors and manages fuel inventory using Excel-based tracking systems.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date logs for hazardous waste and wastewater disposal in compliance with environmental regulations.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Drafts preliminary test reports and accurately summarizes test results.
  • Ensures all testing is performed in alignment with relevant approval agency standards (e.g., UL, FM Global, ICAO).
  • Prepares reports for internal stakeholders and regulatory bodies as required.
  • Assists in preparing for internal/external audits and agency inspections.
  • Participates in compliance walkthroughs and helps implement follow-up actions.

Safety & Compliance

  • Participates in safety toolbox talks and safety drills.
  • Supports improvements to safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintains compliance with all fire safety, hazmat, and environmental standards.
  • Supports implementation and monitoring of lab and site-specific safety programs (e.g., PPE use, safe work practices).
  • Participates in job hazard analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments.
  • Monitors air and water discharges, spill control, and prevention systems.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations (e.g., EPA, DEQ).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required:

  • Minimally Certified Firefighter Level I.
  • DOT and Hazmat certified preferred.
  • Valid driver's licenses.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for up to 8 weeks per year, domestically and internationally.
  • Strong knowledge of fire safety procedures and laboratory test operations.
  • Competency in tablet-based data entry and Excel for inventory tracking.
  • Experience in fire suppression testing or an R&D test lab desired.
  • Familiarity with fire and safety test standards such as NFPA, UL, EN, ICAO preferred.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

On-site, in-office and fire testing center of our Green Bay, WI business unit.

This position is very active and requires standing, walking, and bending throughout the day.

Ability to frequently lift and/or move items up to and including fifty (50) pounds.

Ability to move around when required for long periods, including but not limited to bending, stretching, twisting, and reaching.
