Wage: $28.64 to $32.40/hr
Wage as of 7/1/26: $29.21 to $33.05/hr
GENERAL FUNCTIONWork involves performing all types of mechanical repair work on trucks and heavy-duty construction equipment, as well as, specialized gasoline and diesel powered equipment, including complex engine repairs, complete overhauls, transmission, brake and differential repairs. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and accepted trade practices with a careful regard for safe work practices, and most assignments performed under general supervision.

RESPONSIBILITIESA. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
High school diploma or the equivalent is required. Two years of education in diesel and heavy equipment plus two (2) years paid mechanic experience repairing diesel engines and heavy-duty trucks and/or equipment required; or four (4) years of paid mechanic experience repairing diesel engines and heavy duty trucks and/or equipment. Education and/or paid experience must include minimum of one (1) year maintaining/repairing electronic engine and machine controls.
Possession of, and maintained while employed with Wood County Highway Department, a valid Wisconsin Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Class A with the “N” endorsement with zero restrictions required, or ability to acquire within 60 days. Possession of a safe driving record and the ability to maintain one while employed by Wood County.
Reading, writing, adding, and subtracting is needed to read and interpret various repair and service manuals. Basic, everyday living skills are needed, as is the ability to understand and follow oral and written directions (work assignments).
Ability to perform computer diagnostics.
Emergency conditions may warrant being called in to work on off-scheduled hours.
Must furnish small tools up to 1-1/4” to perform all light and heavy-duty equipment work.
Basic equipment used: wrenches, screwdrivers, power tools, lifts.
