Position Summary

Our Shelter Care Unit is looking for compassionate, composed and resourceful individuals to join our team now!

Shifts & Hours

Part‑time and On‑Call positions are available.

  • Part‑time:
    Overnight Shift, every‑other weekend. Friday 11:00 p.m.–Saturday 7:00 a.m.;
    Saturday 11:00 p.m.–Sunday 7:00 a.m.
  • Part‑time:
    Day Shift, every other weekend. Saturday and Sunday 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
  • On‑Call:
    Work open shifts as available.

Shift differential: additional $0.50 per hour from 4:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m., $1.25 per hour from 10:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m., and $0.50 for all weekend hours.

Responsibilities
  • Provides care and supervision to residents (up to 18 males and females ages 10‑17) who are placed at Brown County Shelter Care through the Juvenile Court System.
  • Operates 24‑hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Plays an active role in planning, directing, and overseeing learning, living, and leisure‑time activities for youth.
  • Enforces Shelter rules, intervenes in crisis situations, and closely monitors the location and activities of children 24‑hours per day.
  • Assures the health, safety, and well‑being of residents placed at Shelter Care.
  • Maintains positive relationships; provides support, encouragement, and information to youth and their families.
  • Interacts directly with and observes activities and behavior of youth; completes daily reports and logs; consults with professionals regarding youth behavior; maintains other records as necessary.
  • Receives referrals for admission, completes written requirements, observes residents on admission and return, contacts case managers as necessary, conducts searches, completes unauthorized leave and incident reports, and completes the release process when a resident leaves Shelter Care.
  • Participates in planning and executing learning, recreational, social, and daily‑living skills programs/activities.
  • Maintains order and administers positive, constructive discipline as necessary and appropriate without the use of physical or mechanical restraint.
  • Communicates professionally with parents, case managers, court staff, coworkers, and community members.
  • Helps plan, develop, participate in, and supervise community outings and presentations for residents.
  • Completes statistical and progress reports on youth or agency activities.
  • Performs and/or oversees general duties such as maintaining inventories of bed linens and equipment, cleaning/inspection of rooms, purchasing of food and supplies, administering first aid/CPR/AED, and minor maintenance/housekeeping duties.
  • Conducts fire drills and carries out emergency/safety plans when needed.
  • Assists in planning and executing a nutritional meal program for youth, including food preparation, storage, and cleanup.
  • Participates in staff development, attends related seminars, staff meetings, and workshops.
  • Assists with shopping for food and other items needed by the residents or the Shelter.
  • Maintains required training, hours, and certifications annually.
  • Carries out all Shelter Care work rules, policies, and procedures, as well as all County policies.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma required;
    Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or an associated field preferred.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
  • Certification in first aid and CPR/AED (or ability to pass a course).
  • Finger‑print background check required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of appropriate educational, recreational, and social activities for youth and ability to carry these out effectively.
  • Knowledge of group dynamics and human relations.
  • Knowledge of health and safety precautions and first aid/CPR/AED.
  • Knowledge of acceptable hygiene standards, blood‑borne pathogen procedures, and proper food handling, preparation, and storage.
  • Knowledge of adolescent psychology, human growth, and development.
  • Knowledge of and ability to help youth acquire daily‑living and social skills.
  • Ability to utilize crisis intervention/de‑escalation skills in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, respectful, responsible, unbiased, and understanding relationship with youth.
