Software Engineer
As a Senior Engineer on Thrivent’s Enterprise Payments and Money Movement team, you will serve as a technical expert in modern application engineering and distributed payment services. You will design and develop business‑critical capabilities that securely and reliably move money across Thrivent’s platforms. You will apply deep technical knowledge to deliver scalable, stable, and resilient services using Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, REST APIs, and SOAP mainframe integrations.
You will determine specifications, plan and design system components, and develop core software that meets performance, security, and compliance requirements. You will work independently and collaboratively with product and engineering peers to solve complex problems, remove technical roadblocks, and ensure solutions align with long‑term platform and architecture strategy. You will also contribute to engineering standards, improve Dev Ops and CI/CD practices, and help strengthen the team’s approach to observability, scalability, and reliability.
In this role you will mentor and up‑skill junior engineers by sharing techniques, reviewing code, guiding debugging efforts, and helping them grow foundational engineering skills. You will participate in product planning, help decompose work, contribute to vendor evaluations, and support hiring efforts by engaging in the tech community and interview process.
Your expertise will advance the quality and maturity of Thrivent’s money movement capabilities and support a culture focused on continuous improvement, collaboration, and delivering meaningful outcomes for clients.

- Ability to work and problem‑solve independently on initiatives that align to the broader software engineering strategy
- Member of team that can work independently, as well as collaboratively with team, in developing core software for the product that delivers outcomes.
- Consistent and dependable in delivering core software that meets or exceeds the team’s expectations for stability, scalability, resilience, etc.
- Shares new ideas and techniques with team; encourages junior engineers to invest in learning as a part of their job.
- Participate in team’s collaboration sessions to provide technical expertise to solve a problem/removing technical roadblocks.
- Participate in product planning and implementation, helping team to understand and decompose work.
- Contribute to develop engineering practices, templates and frameworks in collaboration with the team.
- Continuously assess technology to build more stable, scalable, and resilient software; use data to measure progress.
- Promote and expand the use of the CI/CD pipeline to improve the deployment and build process.
- Participate in the team support rotation and provide expert knowledge on focus subsystems.
- Contribute to define the selection criteria for selecting the right technology vendors.
- Participate in proof of concept/technology along with the vendor.
- Provide guidance to junior engineers to help them learn foundational software engineering skills.
- Provide technical expertise and help the team to solve technical/software issues.
- Provide trainings to the junior developers and groom them.
- Provide domain expertise on software products in their area to junior engineers to help them learn/grow their skills and contribute as part of the team.
- Engage in the tech community to build the Thrivent technology brand and position as the employer of choice in the market.
- Participate in the interview process or be part of the panel to recruit the right talent to the team.
- Contribute to the recruitment to define the structure of the interview process to hire the right talent to the team.
