Position: Assimilation of Hyperspectral Infrared Radiance Observations in the GEOS

NASA Postdoctoral Program

Organization: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Field of Science: Earth Science

Description: This postdoctoral opportunity invites proposals focusing on the usage of infrared radiance observations to improve atmospheric states and model forecasts. Proposals may include assimilation of radiance data from new hyperspectral infrared instruments such as IASI‑NG, MTG‑IRS, and enhancement of CrIS radiance assimilation algorithms, as well as the use of machine learning methods to address model biases.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement data assimilation techniques for hyperspectral infrared radiance observations.
  • Conduct research to improve atmospheric state estimates and forecast accuracy.
  • Apply machine learning methods to address model biases.
Qualifications
  • Advanced university degree in Physics, Maths, Meteorology, or related fields, ideally a PhD, or equivalent proven research experience.
  • At least one‑year relevant work experience.
  • Familiarity with satellite data analysis and data assimilation.
  • Strong computing skills in a Unix/Linux environment, including Fortran/C++ coding and analysis tools such as Python, IDL.
Eligibility
  • U.S. Citizens or U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents.
  • Foreign nationals eligible for an Exchange Visitor J‑1 visa status.
  • Applicants for LPR, asylees, or refugees in the U.S. at the time of application with a valid EAD card and I‑485 or I‑589 forms pending status.
