Job Summary and Distinguishing Features of the Work

Camp Pine Tree is a traditional summer day camp at the Greenbelt Youth Center, where campers ages 6-11, will participate in a variety of daily activities including sports, crafts, group games, field trips, free swim, and swimming lessons.

Camp Pine Tree staff consist of Group Leaders, Specialists, and After Care Counselors.

Group Leader

Group Leaders are responsible for the overall supervision of 12 to 15 campers, throughout their daily activities. Group Leaders must ensure campers arrive on time for their scheduled activities and must assist Specialists with the implementation of these activities.

Specialist

Specialists lead activities for rotating groups of campers throughout the camp day. Specialists must provide age-appropriate, creative, progressive instruction to groups of 12 - 30 campers at a time. Specialists are responsible for developing lesson plans for the summer that will ensure quality fun for a variety of campers, while ensuring the safety of all participants. Knowledge and experience in a specialized area (sports, art, music, dance, etc.)

After Care Counselor

After Care Counselors are responsible for the overall supervision of 12 to 15 campers enrolled in after care. After Care Counselors lead campers in a variety of activities during after care hours. After Care Counselors are essential to the image of Camp Pine Tree as many parents only have the opportunity to observe camp when picking up their camper during after care hours.

Job Functions
  • Enthusiastic participation with the campers in all camp activities.
  • Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week.
  • Participate in field trips and special all-camp activities as needed/directed.
  • Camp counselors maintain a rigorous schedule, accompanying and helping to mentor a group of campers throughout the busy camp day.
  • Assist with intern supervision and support.
  • Ensure proper camper behavior through the summer camp 3 R’s (Respectful, Responsible, Ready) policy and address any behavior concerns.
  • Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to camp leadership.
  • Assists in maintaining accurate program records, including incident reports, first aid logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
  • Actively participate in staff training, meetings, and other activities.
  • Maintain health, safety, cleanliness in program areas.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience
  • Counselor applicants must be at least 18 years old or a high school graduate as of June 15, 2026.
  • Experience or interest in visual art, music, dance, or drama.
  • Experience working in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field.
  • Unlimited positive energy and ability to build and or work as a cohesive team.
  • Desire and ability to work in a camp setting.
  • Good role model, high integrity, and adaptable.
  • Must be available for a majority of the camp season (Monday-Friday, June 15 - August 14, 2026).
Desired Licenses and Certifications
  • First Aid and CPR certification or willing to become certified before camp preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of
  • Champions inclusion activities, strategies, and initiatives. Empathetically listens and communicates for understanding when negotiating and dealing with conflict.
  • A variety of games, sports, activities, riddles, songs, and arts & crafts that children will enjoy participating in.
