Overview
Aerospace Engineering Intern s internship provides an entry point into the space industry, with exposure to flight operations, trajectory design and analysis, software tools, and space flight safety. The intern will develop knowledge to solve operational and mission challenges and learn to coordinate and integrate information across functional areas to develop and deliver space analysis products that support customer situational awareness and decisions.
Potential for broadening into related areas of study.
- Coordinate and integrate relevant information and findings across multiple functional areas to develop and deliver space analysis products.
- Assist in applying orbital mechanics to real-world problems and contribute to data-driven analysis and decision support for customers.
- Participate in ongoing learning and development related to spacecraft systems, flight dynamics, and navigation.
- Collaborate with team members to understand processes and learn to apply analytical techniques in a dynamic work environment.
- Understanding of spacecraft systems, flight dynamics, navigation, orbit determination, and predictions using mathematical models and algorithms.
- Ability and willingness to multi-task and apply innovative analysis to solve customer problems in a dynamic environment.
- Willingness to study orbital or space science data and non-regular data message management.
- Ability to learn how to apply orbital mechanics to real-world problems.
- Aptitude in compiling statistics based on current space object population.
- Education and/or experience in code design; intermediate proficiency in Python.
- Preferred coursework or experience with astrodynamics tools (e.g., MATLAB, ODTK, GMAT, Free Flyer, GTDS, Monte, STK) and Python libraries (Num Py, Pandas, Matplotlib, Sci Py).
- Sophomore, Junior, or Senior at an accredited university pursuing a related degree; or recently graduated.
- Candidate must be enrolled in or have recently completed one or more of the following:
Aerospace Engineering, Astrophysics, Aeronautics, or related space-related programs. Other related programs will be considered. - Relevant coursework may include Spacecraft Control, Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics, Experimental Dynamics & Control, Spacecraft Design, Orbital Mechanics, Systems Engineering, Space Environment, Numerical Methods, Statistics, Aerodynamics, Model Based Systems Engineering, Thermodynamics, Partial Differential Equations.
- Clearance is not required; candidate must meet eligibility requirements and be willing to complete a background investigation. U.S. Citizenship required. Employment contingent upon meeting eligibility requirements.
- Job Location:
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD. Candidates are expected to provide their own transportation. Possibility for remote (Zoom, Teams) collaborations.
