Groundskeeper, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Prince George's Department of Parks and Recreation, Natural & Historical Resources Division, Park Ranger Unit is seeking a Seasonal Intermittent Park Ranger to perform general and skilled park maintenance work involving considerable responsibility, complexity, and variety. After being given assignments from supervisors, the incumbent will complete various tasks including groundskeeping, equipment operation and maintenance, trail maintenance, and more.
Work involves groundskeeping and landscaping, requiring strenuous physical effort that may involve operating and transporting equipment (e.g., mowers, UTV’s, Dingo, and other mowing/landscaping equipment). Other related duties may also be assigned.
The weekly work schedule will be a minimum of 20 hours per week, maximum of 40 hours per week. Hours are not to exceed 1560 hours during the length of the contract. The preferred range of work hours will fall between Sundays – Wednesdays, 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM.
This position pays at a rate of $15.63 to $20.63 per hour

- Perform general maintenance which includes mowing operations, landscaping, gardening, trail maintenance, and tree maintenance.
- Operate small engine equipment and power tools.
- Maintains and cleans equipment, reports and submits broken equipment to be repaired, sharpens saws and hand tools, keeps workspace clean and organized.
- Work closely with supervisors to assist with operations and management by communicating needs and suggestions from the field.
- Perform safety checks and minor maintenance on equipment.
- Operate a full range of vehicles and equipment including trucks with trailers, UTVs, mowers, small engine equipment, power tools, etc.
- Coordinate tools, equipment, materials and supplies needed for projects.
- May be asked to assist Rangers with maintenance-based assignments, duties, and projects.
- Perform other duties as needed.
- Use computers to send and receive work assignment information.
- Wear assigned uniform and follow dress code at all times.
The preferred candidate will have landscaping/horticulture/maintenance-based experience and/or familiarity with park-related maintenance operations.
Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
Important worker characteristics- Considerable knowledge of methods and procedures for maintaining park grounds and park equipment and the ability to perform such duties.
- Ability to receive, interpret, and follow directions.
- Strong working knowledge and experience in groundskeeping and operating equipment such as power tools, chainsaws, mowers, large trucks and trailers.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
- Effective written and spoken communication skills.
- Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Proficient computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft office.
- Knowledge of Commission organization, policies, and procedures (developed primarily after employment).
- Ability to regularly lift 50 lbs.
