Unit:
The Acute Care Cardiology Unit (ACCU) is part of the Heart Institute and provides comprehensive cardiac care for complex medical and surgical patients. ACCU cares for patients from newborn to adults, including those with heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, heart and multi-organ transplants, post-procedural care, and congenital heart disease. Therapeutic modalities include noninvasive monitoring, cardiac telemetry, oxygen therapies, feeding tubes, central line access, inotropic/anticoagulation/antiarrhythmic drug therapy, NIRS, and complex drainage tube management.

Patients may have additional specialty mechanical pumps, including mechanical circulatory support devices such as the Berlin Heart, the Syn Cardia total artificial heart, and the Heart

MateIII.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership:
    Provide programmatic leadership of the clinical component in assigned areas to ensure quality patient care outcomes. In collaboration with the Clinical Director, develop and implement goals, standards, policies, educational programs, procedures, and practices aligned with the strategic plan. Monitor situations affecting daily operations and take appropriate action. Participate in development, coaching, and evaluation of department personnel. Mentor and provide learning and development opportunities for direct reports.

    Establish workforce communication that reflects Core Values and cultural competence. Ensure staff competence through appropriate training and practice oversight. Demonstrate integration of the Interprofessional Practice Model (IPM) in practice. Ensure shared governance and shared decision making are integrated with leadership practices. Maintain strong interpersonal communication, presentations, written materials, and group facilitation. Hold self and others accountable for mutual professional expectations and outcomes.
  • Compliance:
    Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Ensure quality and adherence to standards through auditing and quality assurance approaches. Follow Directors’ guidance in corrective action plans. Partner with Center for Professional Excellence (CPE) and Accreditation Services to improve staff performance, compliance, and documentation. Ensure reporting staff have required competence, education, and clinical performance meets standards of compliance. Promote interdisciplinary involvement and knowledge of compliance standards, status, and actions.

    Facilitate knowledge and actions of employees with appropriate policies and standards of performance.
  • Operations:
    Serve as a point of contact and resource for daily operations. Research and resolve operational questions and problems. Provide oversight and guidance in day-to-day patient staffing. Evaluate and adjust resource allocation based on patient needs and system factors. Establish and maintain orientation procedures for new employees. Integrate annual operational goals into daily practice. Address problem trends, develop and implement solutions to improve processes and workflow for individuals and teams.

    Oversee and evaluate clinical practices, patient outcomes, and all practices related to safety and quality care. Support patient care delivery in their area as needed.
