Summary
American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, seeks one member to contribute to landscape stewardship and historic preservation projects alongside Andrew Johnson National Historic Site staff.
The Traditional Trades Advancement Program-Landscape Stewardship Corps is intended for enthusiastic individuals who want to gain experience in historic preservation and horticulture. No education or experience in the field is necessary.

Description:
Andrew Johnson National Historic Site (ANJO), Greeneville, Tennessee, is a National Historic Site established in 1965 to honor the 17th president of the United States. The 16-acre park includes a visitor center, a tailor shop, two of Johnson's homesteads, and his burial site at the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery, where interns will focus much of their work. The site is located on Main Street in Greeneville's historic downtown area with nearby amenities;
the visitor center is 43 miles southwest of Tri-Cities Regional Airport.

Position OverviewAs part of the team, you will play a vital role in historic preservation and landscape improvement projects, working with dedicated NPS staff to help preserve this important site for future generations. Under guidance from ANJO staff, ACE members will care for Andrew Johnson National Cemetery using best practices in cultural landscape management. ACE members will gain experience with power and hand tools, tree pruning methods, install lightning protection and aerate tree roots.
The role may also involve masonry and carpentry work in cemetery preservation.
This placement is designed to facilitate professional development and exposure to land management agencies, with opportunities to gain experience in different conservation fields and shadow different work groups.
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Responsibilities- Care for Andrew Johnson National Cemetery using best practices in cultural landscape management.
- Gain experience with power and hand tools, tree pruning, lightning protection installation, and aerating tree roots.
- Explore masonry and carpentry work in preservation efforts.
Required:
- U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident as required by U.S. government contracts.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ages 18–30 (up to 35 if a U.S. veteran).
- Professional, positive representation of ACE and partner organization.
- Ability to work self-directed and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license and insurable driving record.
- Willingness to undergo and pass criminal history checks.
- Ability to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Bi-weekly timesheets and evaluations; mid-term for longer terms.
- No participation in prohibited activities per the Member Service Agreement.

Preferred:
- Ability to learn and work independently and with a team.
- Interest in preservation horticulture, arboriculture, history, and/or environment.
- Living Allowance: ~40 hours/week; $720/week, dispersed bi-weekly, to offset food and incidental expenses.
- Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Eligibility for federal hiring authority after 640 hours of service; 16 weeks typically needed; eligibility may extend with combined terms.
- Housing: ACE member is responsible for housing; not provided by ACE or the NPS.
- Professional Development Stipend: $1,000 for pre-approved uses.
- Provided Training/Orientation: OSHA-10 and Introduction to Preservation Horticulture, plus position-specific training and policy orientation.
- Physical Demands:
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, tool use, stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs; manual dexterity required. - Vision Requirements:
Close, distance, peripheral and depth perception; focus ability. - Weight Lifted:
Frequently up to 15 lbs; up to 50 lbs when needed. - Environment:
Indoor and outdoor work; varying weather and climates. - Noise:
Moderate to high due to use of power tools. - Travel:
May require domestic travel.
The ACE member(s) may encounter extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. Work must be performed safely to protect self, others, and resources.
Vehicle & Equipment Use/SafetyVehicle use may be provided by NPS or ACE; tools provided by NPS. PPE is required and training and safety protocols must be followed.
