The Wastewater Treatment Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining the wastewater treatment system in compliance with federal and state environmental regulations. This role involves monitoring system performance, conducting routine and preventative maintenance, and maintaining accurate environmental records. The operator must follow safety policies and procedures while striving to meet quality and delivery expectations to support cost reduction and process improvement.

Shift:

Weekend days are Saturday, Sunday, and Monday: 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You will work 36 hours but will be paid for 40 hours.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Attendance: Must maintain regular, predictable attendance and be available for overtime and weekend shifts (including Saturdays).
  • Operational Tasks:
  • Operate and monitor the wastewater treatment system.
  • Inspect all equipment and instrumentation daily.
  • Clean, inspect, and calibrate probes as per schedule.
  • Routinely check chemical levels in feed tanks and drums.
  • Clean filter presses (usually 1-2 times per shift).
  • Monitor CR+6 tank for proper chemical treatment.
  • Regularly inspect the clarifier and assess setting characteristics.
  • Monitor incoming wastewater for high concentrations or unusual upsets.
  • Maintain records of chemical additions, calibrations, significant parameters, and maintenance activities.
  • Sample effluent discharge in accordance with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment Permit.
  • Process Improvement: Actively participate in developing improvements to the wastewater treatment process.
  • Waste Management: Handle, document, and schedule the disposal of wastewater and process waste safely, and assist with unloading chemicals and loading waste to outside vendors.
  • Safety and Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and work policies, including those related to hazardous materials and waste handling.
  • Training: Must be a Certified Wastewater Treatment Team Member and maintain Hazmat Certification (which may require passing a Hazmat physical).

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Minimum of six months of related experience or a one-year certificate from a technical school (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Must pass a Hazmat physical. (Will be performed within 2 weeks of employment)
  • Okay training on 1st shift (6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) then transferring to either weekend days or weekend nights.
  • Troubleshooting experience is preferred.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift containers up to 25 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, and work in physically demanding environments.
  • Capability to work with various chemicals, such as zinc, caustic, and acids.
  • Willingness to work 12+ hour shifts, including weekends.
