Summary

Under the direction of the security supervisor, the Security Officer protects the life and property of all persons on Baystate Health property. The officer ensures consistent and safe service delivery throughout the medical center, patrols hospital buildings and grounds, deters loss, monitors surveillance cameras, enforces access control, examines doors and windows, maintains vehicle security, monitors fire and infant protection systems, responds to all calls for assistance and emergency codes, provides escorts, and assists in traffic control and special assignments.

Job Responsibilities
  • Patrols facility and grounds or maintains fixed post coverage, inspecting security, health, and safety hazards, unauthorized persons, and unsecured doors and windows, taking corrective actions as necessary. Responds to calls for service, alarms, and emergency code activation, rendering aid, traffic/pedestrian control, and clinician assistance, such as de‑escalating emotionally distressed persons. Reports unusual occurrences, property damage, theft, and suspicious activities and prepares detailed reports.
  • Enforces the access control program. Issues visitor badges, explains access denials, identifies un‑identified persons, secures doors, completes unsecured door reports, documents inspections of high‑risk areas, clears floors of visitors, issues vendor badges, and takes immediate action to correct security problems.
  • Focuses on safeguarding security and customer service needs of patients, visitors, and employees, ensuring the highest quality safety and service to the community.
  • Responds to codes and emergencies immediately, operates fire equipment, has knowledge of emergency response plans, assists the Emergency Management Director in setting up the emergency operations center, and notifies police when appropriate.
  • Assists in traffic control: keeps fire lanes clear, provides parking guidance, controls helicopter landings, enforces parking rules, completes reports, and prevents vehicle congestion.
  • Understands policy on the use of force, manages complex emotionally charged situations with crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques, demonstrates restraint protocols, and works with other departments for a team approach to disruptive incidents.
  • Provides escorts as directed, ensuring safe escort of employees and visitors within and outside the institution.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations: collects information at incident scenes, renders timely reports, investigates lost and found property, and traces patient progress.
  • Performs special assignments such as controlling movements of at‑risk patients, supporting clinical areas, conducting campus mobile patrols, and providing security for special events.
  • Provides escorts to behavioral patients and criminal trauma patients, performs patient watches in the Emergency Department and on inpatient units upon request, and performs additional escort duties as needed.
  • May be assigned to watch patients in the Emergency Department and assist inpatient units during physically aggressive incidents.
  • Demonstrates and models principles of service excellence for patient and employee experience.
  • Completes all incident reports objectively, writes clearly and legibly, and submits documentation to the supervisor before shift end.
  • Has working knowledge of the Photo m and Premisys access system for creating and reprinting badges.
  • When on building rounds, swipes any card access reader encountered.
  • Demonstrates professionalism when directing staff, visitors, and patients throughout the hospital and provides assistance as needed.
  • For Baystate Medical Center only, provides escorts to operating rooms and procedural areas, supports nursing units during criminal trauma admissions with photo s and a 48‑hour presence, and continues detail if threat assessment warrants.
  • Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Active U.S. driver's license.
    Preferred Experience

    3–6 months of military, police, fire, corrections, behavioral health, or healthcare security experience. If no security‑related experience, an associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field may be considered.

    Skills and Competencies

    Proficient in Microsoft Word, report‑writing, and customer service/comms. Uses computer systems to document activity and assist visitors in locating patients.

    Education

    GED or HiSET (required).

    Certifications

    Driver license (Other/International). I.H.S.S. Basic Officer Certification.

    Compensation

    Minimum – Midpoint – Maximum: $19.29 – $22.16 – $25.87 per hour. Base salaries are based on experience and the position’s grade.
