Position OverviewPrimary Purpose of Position
The Accountant in the Treasurer’s Office performs professional accounting, reconciliation, analysis, and financial reporting functions related to student accounts, receivables, cashiering, and University revenue. The position is responsible for reviewing and analyzing financial transactions, reconciling accounts and subsidiary systems, researching and resolving discrepancies, preparing accounting entries and reports, and supporting the accuracy and integrity of financial records. The Accountant applies generally accepted accounting principles ( GAAP ), University and UNC System policies, and established internal controls in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
The position also provides accounting and operational support for student account activities and works collaboratively with campus partners to research and resolve financial issues.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The North Carolina A&T State University Treasurer’s Office is responsible for the administration and oversight of student accounts receivable, billing and payment processing, cashiering, University cash receipts, refunds, collections, and related financial operations. The office supports the accurate and timely recording, reconciliation, and safeguarding of University funds while maintaining appropriate internal controls and compliance with University, UNC System, state, and federal requirements.
The Treasurer’s Office works collaboratively with campus departments to support financial operations and provides direct service to students, parents, employees, and other University stakeholders.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; or a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or a related field with a minimum of 18 semester hours of accounting coursework; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional accounting experience.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. Two or more years of professional accounting or financial experience, preferably in higher education. Experience with Banner, Touch Net, or similar financial systems and proficiency in Microsoft Excel preferred. Strong analytical, reconciliation, problem-solving, customer service, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple financial functions and competing deadlines.
