Position Summary

Work cooperatively with fellow Cabin Counselors to provide a healthy, safe and enjoyable camp environment and experience for all campers. Cabin Counselors live in a cabin group of 16 campers and provide activity instruction to additional campers during the day.

Essential Functions Camper support (60%)
  • Ensure campers are on time to activities with the appropriate supplies.
  • Assist campers at meal times, and in the cabin to ensure campers are maintaining health and hygiene practices such as showering, wearing clean clothes, and getting appropriate sleep.
  • Cabins and program areas are kept clean and organized.
  • Provide guidance to campers on their schedule, activity choices and abiding camp rules.
  • Lead cabin activities, songs and games that are engaging and age appropriate.
  • Provide emotional and behavioral support to campers as needed by following behavior management techniques as outlined in the staff manual and during training.
  • Follow all camp policies and procedures to ensure the health and safety of campers.
  • Role model appropriate hygiene, interpersonal interactions and dress codes at all times.
  • Greet parents and campers professionally and with a smile, using appropriate language.
Activity Instruction (30%)
  • Provide instruction of assigned camp activities to campers.
  • Manage camper behavior to ensure all campers are actively and positively participating.
  • Ensure the safety of all campers when participating in camp activities.
  • Keep program areas clean and supplies well maintained.
Paperwork and Administration (10%)
  • Complete daily and weekly camper documentation.
  • Attend daily and weekly staff meetings.
  • Keep cabins and other assigned camp locations clean and tidy.
  • Other duties and tasks assigned by leadership to assist in functioning of camp operations and programs.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Counselors will be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions. An average of 3 miles of walking is expected each day. Staff must be comfortable walking on uneven ground for extended periods. Willing and able to sleep in shared housing in a cabin with other counselors and campers; single or private accommodation is not available. Comfortable sleeping outdoors at least one night a week and enthusiastically supporting campers to sleep out.

Comfortable being near a range of animals including snakes, spiders, lizards and other native‑and‑non‑native species. Able to sustain energy and enthusiasm throughout the full work day. Weekend work is required; this position requires availability to work on‑site 7 days a week for the contract period. Functions, activities, and working conditions may change or new ones may be added during the course of employment to support the operation of camp.

Required

Experience and Skills
  • Completed at least 1 year of college education.
  • A desire to positively impact the life of a child and willingness to put the needs of campers first.
  • Have a passion for science, animals and childhood development.
  • Able to effectively communicate ideas, thoughts and instructions in a constructive manner.
  • Self‑motivated and able to work on tasks and assigned goals with minimal supervision.
  • Be willing to learn new concepts and skills.
  • Able to work in a team and both give and take direction from others.
  • Willingness to adhere to camp’s code of conduct, rules and policies.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary starts at $4,000 for first‑year staff members; see contract for salary details. Additional $10 credit in the camp store for each week of contract period. Housing, meals and laundry included. Two 1‑hour breaks provided each day, and 1 scheduled 21‑hour break each week.
