Position Summary: The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills.

Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

Additional Details: The Department of Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations (ELC) in the School of Education seeks Graduate Assistants (GA) for the 2026 – 2027 academic year (i.e. from August 2026 – May 2027). These GA positions are either as Graduate Teaching Associates (GTA) or as Graduate Research Assistants (GRA) and are open only to current and newly admitted ELC doctoral students.

Responsibilities
  • As a Graduate Assistant, you will regularly communicate with the ELC Office Manager and the ELC faculty member with whom you are paired.
  • Graduate Assistants’ workload is 20 hours of service per week.
  • Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) work 20 hours per week as negotiated with faculty with whom they are paired.
  • Graduate Teaching Associates (GTAs) are expected to use 10 hours for their teaching-related responsibilities and work the remaining 10 hours as a graduate research assistant with faculty with whom they are paired.
  • If selected as a Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA), you are expected to teach an assigned course (see above) and participate in ELC 724 each Fall semester. You can take this twice for your program of studies. After that, you can take the class for credit, but it will not count toward your program of studies, or you may audit the class, still participating as a full member.
  • Graduate Assistants must be available to attend The Graduate School’s and any other UNCG or department orientations.
  • Graduate Assistants may be required to complete various trainings and review procedure requirements.
  • Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be enrolled in ELC full-time which is generally a minimum of 9 credit hours.
  • Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
  • Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and The Graduate School.
  • Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
  • May not be an employee of the UNC system or elsewhere on campus (unless you receive permission from ELC Department and The Graduate School).
  • Additionally, to be eligible for appointments as Graduate Teaching Associates (GTA):

  • You are expected to have knowledge (through coursework) of the philosophy, history, and sociology of education and critical pedagogy.
  • Teaching experience, especially undergraduate teaching, is preferred.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Proficient in using computers and working in programs, such as, Microsoft Office Suite and Canvas.
    • Proficient English language skills.
    • Able and willing to learn new skills.
    • Able and willing to work with sensitive and confidential materials.
    • Flexibility and patience.
    • Research skills.
