About Our School
Guilford Preparatory Academy is a K-8 public charter school dedicated to academic achievement, character development, and enriching learning experiences. The performing arts are an essential component of our whole-child approach, and we strive to cultivate creativity, communication, and confidence in every student. We are seeking a dynamic Drama/Theatre Teacher to lead our K-8 drama program and help students explore the transformative power of the performing arts.
Position Summary
The Drama/Theatre Teacher will design and implement a developmentally appropriate theatre arts curriculum for students in grades K-8. This role includes teaching acting fundamentals, stage presence, improvisation, script work, and production skills, as well as coordinating school plays and performances. The ideal candidate is energetic, student-centered, and skilled at fostering creativity in a supportive, structured environment.
Responsibilities
* Develop and deliver standards-based instruction in drama and performing arts for grades K-8.
* Teach core theatre concepts, including acting techniques, voice and movement, improv, character development, and ensemble work.
* Plan and direct school-wide performances, such as plays, showcases, and special events.
* Manage all aspects of production, including rehearsals, staging, props, costumes, and student crew support.
* Collaborate with other teachers to integrate drama into cross-curricular projects.
* Create a classroom environment that encourages expression, collaboration, and creativity.
* Assess student learning and provide timely feedback to students and parents.
* Maintain materials, props, costumes, and classroom resources.
* Support the mission, culture, and expectations of the charter school.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Theatre Education, Performing Arts, or a related field required.
* Valid teaching license or eligibility for licensure preferred (state-specific).
* Experience working with elementary and middle school students, preferably in an educational or theatre setting.
* Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
* Ability to plan and lead theatrical productions and events.
* Strong communication and organizational abilities.
Preferred Skills
* Experience directing youth productions.
* Background in technical theatre (lighting, sound, set design) is a plus.
* Experience in charter or K-8 environments.
* Ability to collaborate effectively within a team setting.
