Senior Tooling Engineer

Greenboro, NC

What is Jet Zero?

Today's aircraft contribute around 4% of global CO2 emissions, equivalent to the emissions of 200 million cars. This is only going to increase:
Air travel is forecasted to double by 2050, while meaningful efficiency gains using current airplanes have hit a wall.

Jet Zero is developing a blended-wing body (BWB) aircraft. It uses up to 50% less fuel and will be built to accommodate zero-emission hydrogen propulsion. Jet Zero is the inevitable solution to sustainable air travel.

The Jet Zero Team

We are experienced aerospace professionals and engineers, excited about the future. That future will only be possible if we share our vision and what it means to people's lives: carbon-free flight that is better for both passengers and airlines around the world.

We are seeking a Senior Tooling Engineer to join our team and revolutionize the role of manufacturing planning within the aviation industry. This role will be critical for bridging design and production by ensuring tooling designs are optimized for precision, durability, and aerospace manufacturing requirements. The role will work closely with Design Engineering and the Manufacturing Integrated Product Team to define and develop detailed tooling solutions and develop ultimate plans for implementation and maintenance.

Tooling engineers will act as a vital link between internal stakeholders and external OEMs, fostering strong partnerships and working closely with vendors to explore innovative solutions, troubleshoot challenges, and ensure the selected tooling solutions meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

What You'll Do:

  • Create detailed designs in CAD for tooling used in aerospace manufacturing processes, ensuring alignment with engineering specifications and production goals.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and industrial engineering to develop tooling approaches that optimize the ability to perform key manufacturing processes.
  • Coordinate with external OEMs and vendors to source, develop, and validate custom tooling solutions.
  • Validate all tooling planning adheres to aerospace industry standards, safety regulations, and company quality protocols.
  • Develop tooling periodic inspections and testing to verify performance and suitability for production.
  • Develop tooling standards for design, production, and maintenance of all tooling solutions.
  • Oversee tooling projects from concept through implementation, managing timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.

What You Bring:

  • An associate's, bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of 8-years of experience in tooling engineering, preferably within the aerospace industry; experience in early-stage manufacturing program development is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with working alongside OEMs and external vendors to develop and source tooling solutions.
  • Practical experience designing or maintaining detailed tooling within aerospace or a similar high-precision manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency with tools and systems such as CAD software (e.g., NX, Solid Works) and PLM platforms (e.g., Team Center) to support collaborative production planning and execution.
  • Knowledge of advanced manufacturing technologies, such as additive manufacturing or CNC machining.
  • Apply and interpret GD&T to ensure designs are dimensioned and toleranced for manufacturability, inspection, and assembly alignment.
  • Excellent communication skills and a self-starter that takes initiative without supervision.

Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

  • 1-2 years of leadership experience either in management or as a technical team leader
  • 1-2 years of new manufacturing program development or capture experience
  • Familiarity and use of Siemens Suite of Manufacturing tools, specifically Team Center, Process Simulate, and NX
Compensation
