Project Manager – Electrical Transmission & Distribution

Compensation: $130,000 – $200,000 Base Salary + Performance Bonus + Comprehensive Benefits
Position OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Project Manager – Electrical Transmission & Distribution (T&D) to lead the successful execution of utility infrastructure projects throughout North Carolina and the surrounding region. This role will oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of electrical transmission, distribution, and substation construction projects, ensuring safety, quality, schedule, and financial objectives are achieved.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background managing complex utility construction projects, including high‑voltage transmission lines, distribution system upgrades, greenfield and brownfield substations, and related electrical infrastructure. This position requires close collaboration with utility clients, engineering teams, subcontractors, field operations, and executive leadership.
Key Responsibilities Project Management & Execution- Manage the full project lifecycle from pre‑construction through commissioning and closeout.
- Lead transmission, distribution, and substation construction projects ranging from capital upgrades to large‑scale utility infrastructure programs.
- Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, resource plans, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with contract requirements.
- Monitor project performance and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for utility clients, consultants, and key stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers while ensuring high levels of satisfaction and project transparency.
- Lead project meetings, progress reviews, and executive reporting.
- Manage change orders, contract modifications, and project negotiations.
- Develop project budgets and forecasts.
- Monitor project costs, labor productivity, equipment utilization, and subcontractor performance.
- Review and approve invoices, pay applications, and project financial reporting.
- Drive profitability through effective project controls and cost management practices.
- Coordinate field operations, engineering teams, procurement, and subcontractors.
- Support construction managers and superintendents in resolving technical and operational challenges.
- Ensure adherence to project specifications, utility standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee commissioning and energization activities for transmission, distribution, and substation facilities.
- Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all OSHA, company, and client safety requirements.
- Participate in safety audits, site visits, and incident investigations.
- Ensure quality control processes are implemented throughout project execution.
- Promote continuous improvement initiatives and best practices across project teams.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Project Management, or a related field (or equivalent industry experience).
- 7+ years of project management experience within electrical utility construction.
- Proven experience managing high‑voltage transmission line construction projects, electrical distribution system projects, substation construction, expansion, or modernization projects.
- Strong understanding of utility construction practices, scheduling, budgeting, and project controls.
- Experience managing subcontractors, field personnel, and multi‑disciplinary project teams.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and utility safety standards.
- Proficiency with project management and scheduling software such as Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or similar tools.
- Strong communication, leadership, negotiation, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to travel to project sites throughout North Carolina and neighboring states as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Construction Management.
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification.
- Experience working with major investor‑owned utilities, electric cooperatives, or municipal utilities.
- Familiarity with EPC, design‑build, and self‑perform construction delivery models.
- Experience managing projects involving 69kV–500kV transmission systems, distribution system hardening and grid modernization, AIS and GIS substations.
- Renewable energy interconnections.
- Knowledge of utility commissioning and energization procedures.
