The City of Greensboro’s Water Resources Department is seeking a detail-oriented, analytical, and customer-focused Laboratory Specialist (Pretreatment Compliance) to join our Pretreatment Program. This position plays a critical role in ensuring industrial wastewater discharges comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, protecting our wastewater treatment facilities, employees, waterways, and community. : $53,902.00 – $61,603.00 Full Salary Range

About the Role:

The Laboratory Specialist (Pretreatment Compliance) assists in implementing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-mandated Industrial Pretreatment Program by monitoring industrial wastewater discharges, supporting compliance efforts, conducting inspections and sampling activities, and providing technical guidance to regulated industries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in administering the City’s Industrial Pretreatment Program in accordance with EPA, state, and local regulations.
  • Conduct inspections, sampling, monitoring, and compliance evaluations of industrial wastewater dischargers.
  • Monitor compliance with wastewater discharge permits and the City of Greensboro Sewer Use Ordinance.
  • Review analytical data and evaluate wastewater discharge characteristics.
  • Provide technical assistance and regulatory guidance to industrial users.
  • Document inspection findings, monitoring results, and compliance activities.
  • Assist with permit development, compliance determinations, and enforcement actions when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare technical reports supporting regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with internal staff, laboratories, regulatory agencies, and industrial customers to ensure program effectiveness.
  • Support initiatives that protect wastewater treatment processes, biosolids quality, employee safety, and environmental health.

Work includes office, laboratory, industrial facility, and field environments.

  • Position may require walking industrial sites, collecting wastewater samples, climbing stairs, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Occasional lifting of sampling equipment and field supplies may be required.
  • This position requires sound professional judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects while meeting regulatory deadlines.
