Overview
The Engineering Manager, Capital Projects & Equipment Engineering will support engineering initiatives within a modern manufacturing and operations environment. This role is responsible for leading equipment, process, packaging, automation, and facility-related projects while driving continuous improvement, operational efficiency, equipment reliability, and regulatory compliance.
The successful candidate will work cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, Operations, Supply Chain, Technical Services, and external partners to develop, implement, and optimize manufacturing systems and capital projects. This position requires a hands-on engineering leader capable of managing multiple projects from concept through commissioning while ensuring safety, quality, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities- Lead engineering projects supporting manufacturing, processing, packaging, warehouse, and facility operations.
- Plan, design, install, commission, and optimize process and packaging equipment systems.
- Analyze equipment performance and manufacturing processes to identify opportunities for productivity, reliability, quality, and safety improvements.
- Develop and implement engineering solutions through testing, data analysis, troubleshooting, and process evaluation.
- Collaborate with equipment manufacturers, contractors, and suppliers to procure and implement equipment that meets operational requirements.
- Support troubleshooting efforts related to equipment, materials, utilities, and manufacturing processes.
- Partner with Operations, Quality, Maintenance, and Technical Services teams to resolve production challenges and improve system performance.
- Develop and execute equipment qualification and validation activities, including Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ).
- Author and maintain engineering documentation, technical specifications, protocols, reports, and standard operating procedures.
- Support new product introductions and process scale-up activities to ensure successful commercial manufacturing implementation.
- Manage capital projects including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, contractor oversight, and project execution.
- Lead facility improvement projects, infrastructure upgrades, utility enhancements, and manufacturing expansions.
- Identify and evaluate emerging technologies and industry best practices that improve manufacturing performance and operational effectiveness.
- Establish engineering standards and capture project learnings to support future engineering initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- 7+ years of engineering experience within a manufacturing environment.
- 5+ years of experience in a regulated industry such as pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food & beverage, nutraceutical, consumer products, or medical device manufacturing.
- Demonstrated experience managing capital projects, equipment installations, process improvements, and facility upgrades.
- Experience overseeing project budgets, schedules, contractors, and stakeholder communications.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing equipment, production processes, and operational excellence initiatives.
- CAD Experience
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, process, and automation systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment and manufacturing issues.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, P&IDs, and technical documentation.
- Working knowledge of GMP and regulated manufacturing requirements.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and continuous improvement skills.
- Effective project management and organizational abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering-related software applications.
- Experience with equipment design, modification, and optimization.
- Knowledge of food, beverage, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, or consumer packaged goods manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with HACCP, FDA regulations, and 21 CFR requirements.
- Experience with blending, processing, packaging, and material handling systems.
- Hands-on fabrication, machining, or maintenance support experience.
- Background supporting automation and manufacturing technology projects.
- CAD Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Food Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
