Senior Technical Manager, Environmental Engineer

WSP is seeking a Senior Technical Manager, Environmental Engineer in Greensboro, NC to provide subject matter technical support and leadership for multi-site/phase environmental engineering work processes, due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, and environmental permitting projects. Ensures project elements and processes relating to water supply, hazardous or solid waste disposal, air emission sources, pollution control, and preserving the environment are conveyed and acted upon with a high level of quality and compliance.

Responsible for providing situational guidance to PMs and managers that address current and future environmental challenges, and that documentation and recommendations accurately account for and address long-term risks to ecological and human health. Leads environmental site assessments, corrective strategies, classification of contaminated materials, and treatment, disposal, and/or onsite remediation activities to avert degradation of air, water, and land resources. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

• Provide oversight with data collection efforts for collecting, identifying, and compiling environmental data from samples of air, soil, water, sludge, and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys.
• Perform professional environmental engineering work and conduct more complex/comprehensive investigations and inspections of air emission sources, hazardous or solid waste facilities, water supply facilities, industrial and agricultural facilities, pollution sources and proposed and existing site conditions, water resources, and underground storage tanks to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
• Lead environmental site assessments (Phase I and II).
• Assist with engineering review of permit applications, engineering design plans and specifications, standby plans and engineering contracts, integrated waste management plans, and periodic construction inspections, to ensure that they comply with applicable state and/or federal regulations and sound engineering practice and standards.
• Meet with various public or private entities or individuals to discuss issues relating to a variety of environmental problems and programs.
• Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, clean-up, or address environmental issues or problems.
• Develop action plans for larger-scale pollution, corrosion, hazardous waste, and environmental control programs.
• Lead larger-scale engineering projects ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, monitoring external events, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring satisfactory performance, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.
• Develop a client base for providing high level environmental engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities
• Mentor staff to support their growth and professional development.
• Remain current in latest environmental engineering techniques.
• Collaborates with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Environmental, Civil, Sanitary, Chemical, Industrial, Agricultural, or Public Health Engineering, or closely related discipline.
• 10+ years of relevant post education experience in environmental engineering.
• Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
• Highly proficient with engineering principles, practices, and methods and their application to environmental and project work-related issues.
• Highly proficient with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products., and mitigation programs.
• Strong knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
• Highly proficient with making technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
• Well-defined experience in conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments in accordance with ASTM guidelines and industry standards.
• Experience with planning and conducting inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies.
