Job Description

Team Penske is seeking a highly skilled Metrology Engineer to join our team and grow our measurement, inspection, and build‑quality capabilities. This role will help define metrology protocols, scanning workflows, and reporting standards that directly improve the accuracy, repeatability, and compliance of our race car builds. The ideal candidate combines hands‑on metrology expertise with strong engineering judgement, process ownership, and the ability to translate complex measurement data into actionable insights across engineering, manufacturing, and race operations.

Key Responsibilities Metrology Strategy & Engineering
  • Define metrology requirements to support component design, assembly accuracy, and vehicle performance targets
  • Establish datum structures, alignment strategies, and inspection methodologies aligned with engineering intent
  • Lead investigation of measurement discrepancies and communicate corrective actions/needs across design, manufacturing, and assembly
Metrology Protocol & Process Development
  • Develop, standardize, and maintain metrology procedures for components, sub-assemblies, and full car builds
  • Define best practices for scanning, probing, GD&T interpretation, and measurement repeatability
  • Establish workflows that ensure consistency across inspection personnel, equipment, and operating conditions
  • Evaluate and test new metrology technologies, tools, and methodologies
Measurement System & Toolchain Development
  • Develop Team Penske’s metrology systems, including:
    • ZEISS ATOS structured‑light scanners
    • Hexagon scanning systems
    • Nikon iGPS large‑volume tracking
    • FAROArm tactile probing
    • CMM Manager for Nikon Surveyor
  • Define calibration strategies, equipment validation procedures, and environmental controls.
  • Ensure measurement system capability, accuracy, and repeatability meet engineering requirements
Data Integration, Automation & Analysis
  • Design and implement scalable workflows for data acquisition, processing, and reporting
  • Develop automation tools and scripts to streamline inspection processes and improve throughput
  • Integrate metrology outputs into engineering, build, and quality systems for downstream analysis
  • Analyze measurement data to identify trends, root causes of variation, and opportunities for design or process improvement
Inspection & Quality Assurance
  • Define and lead inspection strategies for incoming parts, subassemblies, and full vehicle builds
  • Identify supplier variation, batch drift, and potential compliance or legality risks
  • Generate clear, actionable reports that drive engineering and operational decisions
Design & Cross‑Functional Integration
  • Work closely with engineering, fabrication, assembly, and race‑team groups to ensure measurement data is used effectively and respond to feedback from several departments.
  • Provide metrology insight during design reviews, supplier evaluations, and post‑event investigations.
  • Collaborate closely within the Team Penske metrology group to share lessons learned, align inspection strategies, standardize best practices, and elevate metrology performance across all Penske programs.
  • Serve as the Indycar technical representative within the metrology group, driving best practices and continuous improvement
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or a related field
    • Associates degree would be considered when combined with experience.
    • High levels of experience can waive this requirement
  • 2+ years of experience in metrology, dimensional inspection, or precision measurement.
  • Familiarity or coursework with CAD, Siemens NX preferred.
  • Proficiency with structured‑light scanning systems (ATOS, Hexagon, or equivalent).
  • Experience with tactile measurement tools (FAROArm, CMMs, laser trackers, or iGPS).
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, datum schemes, and alignment strategies.
  • Working knowledge of Python
