Position: Police Supervisor I (Police Sergeant I)

Primary Purpose Of Position

This is first‑line supervisory or managerial law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, employees enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Employees have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction.

Position Overview

Work involves supervision and/or management of a unit of officers or other Departmental personnel in their responses to routine calls, emergencies, and other law enforcement services provided. Employees evaluate appropriateness of officer responses; designate assignments; direct needed resources; and interpret laws, ordinances, and Department policies and procedures. Duties may include orientation and training of officers, inspections of officers and/or other Departmental personnel on a shift, conducting pre‑shift briefings, review of all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift, activity coordination, discipline, conducting performance reviews, and providing input concerning operational planning.

The primary mission of Police and Public Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment supporting the University’s pursuit of research and academic excellence. Our highly dedicated law enforcement professionals continually strive to reduce crime, accidents and loss of property through investigative processes and effective community partnerships.

Minimum Requirements

A minimum of an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out of state lateral hires. At the agency head’s discretion, up to 2 additional years of sworn law enforcement experience may be preferred.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Prior experience in campus or municipal policing, with demonstrated skill in advanced investigations or specialized assignments.
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Current certification from the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission (NC CJETSC) as a commissioned law enforcement officer.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license (or ability to obtain prior to appointment).
Remote or Hybrid Work Arrangement

On‑site (Employees are primarily in the office and/or have a critical job requirement that requires dedicated office space on‑site).
