Position Overview
First‑line supervisory or managerial law enforcement work on a university campus or other state facility. Employees have full powers of arrest and enforce state and federal laws, ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. The role involves supervising or managing a unit of officers or other departmental personnel during routine calls, emergencies, and other law enforcement services.
Responsibilities include evaluating officer responses, assigning duties, directing resources, interpreting laws, ordinances, and department policies, and providing input on operational planning.
The Police and Public Safety unit’s primary mission is to provide a safe and secure environment that supports the university’s research and academic excellence. Dedicated law enforcement professionals work to reduce crime, accidents, and loss of property through investigative processes and effective community partnerships.
Minimum RequirementsA minimum of an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and four years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Certification from the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission (NC CJETSC) as a commissioned police officer or eligibility for out‑of‑state lateral hires. Up to two additional years of sworn law enforcement experience may be preferred.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Advanced degree in a related field.
- Prior experience in campus or municipal policing with demonstrated skill in advanced investigations or specialized assignments.
- Current certification from the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission as a commissioned law enforcement officer.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license (or ability to obtain prior to appointment).
