DescriptionThis is a professional and highly technical position responsible for maintaining, upgrading, and managing server infrastructure, software, hardware, and networks.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THIS CLASSThe Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for maintaining, upgrading, and managing core server infrastructure, software, hardware, and networks. Resourcefulness is a necessary skill in this role. Ability to diagnose and resolve problems quickly. Communicate with a variety of interdisciplinary teams and users. Ensure that technology infrastructure runs smoothly and efficiently. Collaborate with firewall, security, and network systems.
The Infrastructure Engineer performs technical, skilled work configuring, installing, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining the server systems hardware and software and related infrastructure; providing support and management of the datacenter and virtual servers;
Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, O365, Azure, backup and enterprise disk storage systems and hardware.?
Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Enterprise Infrastructure Manager.
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with industry standards and project/operational requirements.
- Oversees the administration, configuration, security, and lifecycle management of the organization’s Microsoft 365 environment to ensure reliability, compliance, and optimized user productivity.
- Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs.
- Monitor daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate location and are recoverable.
- Repair and recover from hardware or software failures.
- Perform Networking and Server Troubleshooting.
- Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis and upgrade administrative tools and utilities.
- Configure/add new services as necessary.
- Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
- Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies to develop, maintain, and test DR plans to ensure compliance with the Department’s DR plan.
- Research and recommend, innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
- Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
- Contribute to and maintain system standards.
- On-Call rotation with other Infrastructure team members which includes after hours, weekends, and holidays.
- Perform other duties as required or requested.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of industry standards, methods, best practices, and procedures related to server, user, mail, disaster recovery, security, and storage administration is a must.
- Knowledge of project management techniques, planning, and resource deployment.
- Knowledge and experience managing cybersecurity initiatives by implementing best-practice security controls, overseeing vulnerability identification and remediation efforts, and ensuring continuous improvement of the county’s security posture through adherence to established frameworks and audit-driven corrective actions.
- Ability to work closely with and provide guidance to other infrastructure staff, Networking, Enterprise Applications, Applications Development, Desktop and GIS teams to ensure sufficient infrastructure exists to satisfy the agreed upon business and customer delivery requirements for all applications and services.
- Ability to fully manage Microsoft Office 365, Teams and Azure.
- Ability to manage servers within a hyperconverged architecture.
- Ability to manage services and protocols on servers like DHCP, DNS, Active Directory, FTP, SSL, etc.
