Primary Purpose Of The Organizational Unit

Facilities Operations provides maintenance, operations, groundskeeping, housekeeping, utility infrastructure, project management, and safety services for all campus departments.

Position Summary

The Primary Purpose Of This Position Is To Perform Maintenance On The Primary Campus Of The University Of North Carolina  Duties And Responsibilities Are As Follows:

  • 30% Specialized Horticulture, Pruning, Disease, and Pest identification
  • 20% General Overall Campus Grounds Upkeep, Cleanup, and Tidiness
  • 10% Fertilizer and Pesticide Application
  • 10% Landscape Plant Installations and Maintenance
  • 10% Skills in the use of machinery, tools, and equipment
  • 10% Crew Lead
  • 5% Hardscape paver maintenance
  • 5% Irrigation system maintenance

This position is a mandatory position as defined in the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy.

Minimum Qualifications

High school or General Educational Development diploma and two years of progressive experience in horticultural work; or associate’s degree in agriculture and natural resources, greenhouse and grounds maintenance, horticulture technology, landscape gardening or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, And Certificates
  • Valid NC Driver’s license
  • NC Pesticide Applicators License or ability to acquire within six months
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3 years experience in Horticulture
Alternate Option

Key Responsibilities & Essential Tasks
  • Specialized Horticulture Practices
    • Demonstrates the ability and knowledge to perform all aspects of general grounds maintenance.
    • Landscape maintenance – Plant/Tree care, hand weeding, landscape design, turf maintenance, over seeding, liming, soil testing, pre‑post emergent weed control, insect and disease control, irrigation system maintenance.
    • Coordinates and schedules work with supervisor and co‑workers.
    • Communicates clearly with co‑workers and the campus community.
    • Confirms understanding of questions and problems.
  • Fertilizer and Pesticide Application
    • Accurately applies nutritional fertilizers to promote healthy grass.
    • Coordinates treatment areas with supervisor and co‑workers.
    • Tasks include pesticide application, spray fertilizer, spread fertilizer, pre/post emergent weed control, insect and disease control.
    • Fills required inventory records and maintains MSDS information sheets.
  • Landscape Plant Installations and Maintenance
    • Uses appropriate methods to prune, irrigate, install, mulch, fertilize, and remove plants.
