Primary PurposeThe main purpose of the UNC Greensboro Police Officer position is to protect and serve students, faculty, staff and visitors through law enforcement and crime prevention. The officer will patrol campus, investigate complaints and violations of State laws and local ordinances using the Community Oriented Policing philosophy, and develop and implement preventative patrol techniques.
Responsibilities- Patrol assigned area, respond to complaints or calls, detect violations of State laws and applicable regulations.
- Apprehend observed violators, investigate violations or complaints to assess and handle cases.
- Collect and preserve evidence, maintain chain of custody.
- Testify in court proceedings and perform related work as required.
- Serve as a patrol officer, detective squad member, crime prevention officer or lead officer on an assigned shift.
- High School diploma or GED (minimum).
- Probationary certification from the NC Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETS) as a commissioned police officer.
- Successful completion of the agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- At least 20 years of age.
- Physical and psychological requirements of the NC CJETS, including physical exam, medical exam, psychological exam, and drug test.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, and to deal with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system professionally.
- Required to complete the university’s orientation course and a twelve-week department field training program during the probationary period.
- Willingness to work day and night shifts, including outside usual schedule for emergencies.
Must hold a valid driver’s license. Must pass an in-depth background investigation, including no felony convictions, driver’s history, criminal history, psychological testing, and drug screening.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements- Ability to subdue resisting suspects and effect forcible arrest.

- Comprehend legal documents (citations, affidavits, warrants).

The position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. The officer must report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Coordinator and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
