Overview
The Correctional Captain II (S) is located at Roanoke River Correctional Institution, duty assignment to a medium custody facility.
Responsibilities- Directly supervise a Correctional Lieutenant II and serve as Officer-in-Charge of the facility for the assigned shift.
- Conduct shift line‑ups, assign posts, inspect personnel for physical and mental readiness, and ensure all equipment is operationally ready.
- Maintain employee records: time sheets, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
- Perform daily inspections of the facility, including offender living areas, medical and kitchen areas, to identify safety hazards and ensure smooth operation.
- Identify training needs and coordinate delivery of training to subordinate staff.
- Supervise daily offender counts for accuracy, schedule transportation and transfers of offenders, and conduct searches of staff, visitors, and offenders for contraband.
- Respond to emergency situations as needed, conduct internal investigations, and serve as an investigator completing OSI investigations.
- Develop operational and emergency plans, post orders, and standard operating procedures (SOP) as required.
- Eligibility for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302).
- Pass a criminal background check and produce a negative drug screening result.
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Documented supervisory skills in a prison facility.
- Knowledge of facility operations and prison policy and procedures.
- Documented report‑writing skills.
- Minimum education:
High school diploma or GED plus 2 years 6 months experience as a Correctional Lieutenant, or 2 years experience as a Correctional Lieutenant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Salary Range: $45,431.00 – $79,504.00 (Grade NC11)
