Description of Work Knowledge

Skills and Abilities

/Management Preferences This position is located at Roanoke River Correctional Institution with a duty assignment to the medium custody facility. This position provides direct supervision for a Correctional Lieutenant II. Employee in this class serves as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the facility for the assigned shift. Position will conduct shift line-up, make post assignments, inspect all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post, and ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.

This position will complete, review, and maintain employees’ time, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms. Position will provide daily inspections of the facility to include offender living areas and medical and kitchen areas to identify possible safety hazards and to ensure the operation is running smoothly. Position will identify training needs and coordinate delivery of training to subordinate staff.

This position will supervise daily offender counts for accuracy, scheduling transportation and transfers of offenders, conduct searches of staff, visitors and offenders for contraband and respond to emergency situations as needed. Position will also conduct internal investigations and will serve as an Investigator completing OSI investigations, develop operational, emergency plans, post orders and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as needed.

Salary Range: $45,431.00 - $79,504.00

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

Documented supervisory skills in a prison facility.

Knowledge of facility operations.

Knowledge of Prisons’ policy and procedures.

Documented report writing skills.

Necessary Special Qualifications : MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

To be considered for a Correctional Captain II position, ALL applicants must :

Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
Pass a criminal background check

Produce a negative drug screening result

Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations

Possess a valid driver’s license

Required Adverse Weather Reporting :

This position is designated as “Mandatory” and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.
