This position combines technical fieldwork, problem-solving, and public service while supporting accurate water measurement, system integrity, and water quality.
Compensation and BenefitsEstimated Hiring Salary Range: $44,000.00 - $50,286.00
Full Salary Range: $41,600.00 - $68,389.00 Annually

As a Meter Services Technician, you will perform a variety of technical field activities related to water meters, customer water services, backflow prevention, water quality, and system testing. You will interact with the public on a regular basis and use independent judgment while following established policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities Include- Perform water meter change-outs and related installation and maintenance activities.
- Detect and investigate leaks on water services and mains.
- Investigate customer “bad water” calls and assist with identifying potential water quality concerns.
- Set permit meters and perform related inspections.
- Inspect and test backflow prevention devices.
- Flush and test fire hydrants.
- Perform flow tests on water services.
- Apply American Water Works Association (AWWA) standards related to testing, repairing, and installing water meters.
- Apply Backflow and Cross Connection standards when installing, testing, and repairing backflow devices.
- Follow applicable confined space rules and regulations.
- Read and interpret strip maps and water block sheets to support field activities.
- Apply minimum water quality standards to assigned work.
- Troubleshoot service and equipment issues and reason through problems to determine appropriate solutions.
- Exercise independent judgment while following Water Resources policies, City policies, procedures, and City ordinances.
- Communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
- Follow written and verbal instructions and maintain organized records and work activities.

Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma/GED
- Valid Driver's License
- NC AWWA Meter Services Technician Certification (must obtain within 18 months of employment to remain in the position)
- 1+ years of experience working in a technical field, with activities related to water meters, customer water services, backflow prevention, water quality, and system testing.
- NC AWWA Meter Services Technician Certification.
- Experience with Meter Viewer or other utility asset locating software.
- Experience with routing software to aid in service address locating.
