It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

Description of Work Reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor at a multi-custody male correctional facility, this position provides case management services to an assigned caseload of offenders. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Performing regular periodic classification reviews, needs assessments, plans, job assignments, program referrals and regular scheduled one-on-one contact for the purposes of correctional and/or motivational counseling.
2. Providing transitional information, assisting with housing and recommendations for the classification upon offender review and assisting with onsite activities.
3. Communicating effectively with other staff, offenders, and the general public.
4. Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders, who can become physically violent and verbally abusive, being capable of defending oneself against attack and performing crisis interventions to include suicide prevention.
5. Preparing written reports which accurately reflect data reviewed by various sources, reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavior data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.
6. This is a certified position and employees may be subject to assist in any certified capacity as needed.

Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

About Central Prison Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers.

While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.
