Position Summary
Summer Day Camp Head Counselor helps provide a safe, fun, high energy, and affordable day camp environment for Hempfield Township and surrounding area residents. This is a great opportunity for someone to make an impactful difference in the community and gain essential leadership skills for future career opportunities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the care and safety of the campers and staff assigned to the camp.
- Each camp includes approximately 50-60 campers and 7 - 10 counselors.
- Assist campers who may need help adjusting to the camp environment
- Be aware of parental concerns which have been communicated to the camp regarding each camper (eg., eating habits, dietary restrictions, special activity requests, medical issues, social concerns).
- Assist the counselors with disciplinary issues, personality conflicts, etc.
- Ensure that all camp areas are neat and clean.
- Communicate with parents of campers who may be experiencing difficulties in camp.
- Ensure the morale of your staff members by monitoring them (sufficient rest, etc).
- Provide guidance to your counselors in their camp-related responsibilities.
- Possess a good sense of humor, and the ability to laugh!
- Enforce the principles and policies of Hempfield Summer Day Camp
Education & Experience:
18 years of age min. & High School Diploma; 2-5 years of experience working with children

Necessary Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
:
The individual must possess the following skills and abilities or be able to demonstrate that he/she can perform the essential function of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
- Must attend Camp Staff training and available 10 weeks in summer.
- Must demonstrate outstanding customer service skills that align with Hempfield CAREs standards.
- Must demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time, and devise solutions to immediate problem.
- Must possess a general understanding of camp programs and how they are conducted.
- Skills in operating a computer with general understanding of Microsoft and Windows OS.
- Understanding English language.
- Must obtain Act 34 Clearances within prior to start of Camp Staff Training.
- Must obtain Mandated Reporter certification and CPR/First Aid certification prior to start of Camp Staff Training (Township provided if needed)

Work is performed 10% in the building and 90% outside the building. Hand eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office and park equipment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or listen; stand; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, equipment or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee must have a driver's license and a safe driving record. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is Summer Day Camp environment. The scheduled work begins at 8:00AM - 5:00PM on weekdays from June - August.
