Under general supervision, performs routine maintenance, preventative maintenance, and minor repairs on City-owned vehicles, equipment, and machinery. The employee is responsible for helping ensure the City’s fleet remains safe, reliable, and operational by performing oil changes, lubrication services, inspections, tire maintenance, battery replacements, and other general mechanical duties.

• Perform routine preventative maintenance on City vehicles and equipment.
• Change engine oil, oil filters, air filters, fuel filters, and hydraulic filters.
• Inspect and maintain fluid levels, including coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and hydraulic fluid.
• Rotate, repair, and replace tires as needed.
• Replace batteries, belts, hoses, wiper blades, lights, and other basic vehicle components.
• Perform vehicle safety inspections and identify maintenance needs.
• Assist with diagnosing mechanical issues and determining repair requirements.
• Maintain service records and documentation for repairs and preventative maintenance.
• Operate diagnostic equipment and basic shop tools safely and effectively.
• Keep the maintenance shop, tools, and work areas clean and organized.
• Assist with emergency repairs to City vehicles and equipment when necessary.
• Transport vehicles and equipment for repairs, inspections, or service appointments.
• Maintain inventory of commonly used parts, fluids, and supplies.
• Follow all safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

• Basic automotive and diesel engine maintenance practices.
• Preventative maintenance procedures.
• Vehicle and equipment safety standards.
• Shop equipment, tools, and diagnostic equipment.
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with mechanical work.

Ability to:

• Perform routine vehicle and equipment maintenance.
• Identify mechanical issues requiring repair.
• Read and understand service manuals and maintenance schedules.
• Safely operate hand tools, power tools, lifts, jacks, and diagnostic equipment.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and vendors.

• High school diploma or GED.
• One (1) year of experience in automotive, diesel, equipment maintenance, or a related field preferred.
• Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

• Possession of a valid Alabama Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
• ASE certification is preferred but not required.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred or may be required within a specified period after hire.

The employee must frequently lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift heavier items with assistance. Work requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing, and working in confined spaces. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions, vehicle exhaust, oils, fuels, lubricants, and mechanical hazards.

Work is performed in a maintenance shop and outdoors under varying weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to noise, moving mechanical parts, fumes, dust, and hazardous materials associated with vehicle maintenance and repair.
