Organizational Unit Overview

The Office of Research, led by the Chief Research Officer, partners and collaborates with different programs, assets, and resources across ECU campuses and facilities along with the UNC designated centers and institutes. The Office of Research provides oversight of ECU's research enterprise, including grant administration and ethical practices; ensures compliance with the federal, state, and University rules and regulations; and includes the following units and committees or boards:
Pre-Award Services, Post-Award Services, Research Administration Analytics, Research Development, Research Integrity and Compliance, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and the University and Medical Center Institutional Review Board.

Job Duties

The Office of Research Integrity and Compliance (ORIC) provides leadership and guidance to the university community regarding Conflicts of Interest (COI) reporting and management, Export Control (EC) related issues, Research Security, and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training and responds to allegations of research misconduct. This position works under minimal supervision to perform regulatory monitoring reviews that support operations and responsibilities of the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance.

This position conducts complex monitoring and assurance activities to determine adherence to internal controls, education/training requirements, and compliance with established policies, procedures and regulatory requirements associated with compliance activities overseen by the office – primarily with conflicts of interest and export controls. Reporting to and under the supervision of the Senior Research Compliance Manager of the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance, the Conflicts of Interest (COI) and Export Controls (EC) Analyst will be responsible for first level review of conflict of interest and export controls disclosures for compliance with all applicable federal, state, and institutional policies and procedures in collaboration with the Export Controls Specialist.

The COI and EC Analyst will collect, analyze, and categorize disclosure information for further review and evaluation. Responsibilities include using critical thinking, analytical skills, and sound judgement to propose determinations and management strategies when reviewing potential conflicts of interest and export control issues. The COI and EC Analyst will maintain a record of all conflicts specifically related to COI matters scheduled for review by the Conflicts of Interest Committee.

The COI and EC Analyst is expected to perform administrative duties to ensure that all pertinent documents and information are available to the COI Committee to facilitate their evaluation of such matters. Among other responsibilities, the COI and EC Analyst will serve as a resource for and provide guidance to the ECU community by answering questions regarding COI and EC policies, procedures, practices, determinations, and other related questions.

The COI and EC Analyst will be involved in system and business process enhancement discussions and provide valuable input for improvements based on community feedback and experience.
