Estimator – Baker Power & Process LLC – Charlotte, NC 28273 – Travel up to 15% – 1 Opening – Req

Summary

The Estimator is responsible for preparing time, cost, and labor estimates for assigned projects, applying specialized methodologies, techniques, principles, and processes. The Estimator follows up with clients to overcome obstacles that could prevent contract awards. For awarded contracts, the Estimator provides ongoing cost‑estimate support to operations.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Identify and quantify construction elements.
  • Enter quantities into appropriate software for pricing.
  • Provide initial data for entry into Commence software.
  • Supply Contracts Department with applicable specification documents to identify insurance requirements.
  • Send new contracts for corporate review.
  • Identify, contact, and build relationships with vendors/suppliers to assess capabilities for specific projects.
  • Analyze and scope vendors/suppliers to determine best value and project continuity.
  • Proactively work to persuade vendors/suppliers to commit to best pricing.
  • Complete estimate: assemble quantities in pricing format to reflect bid form requirements; create baseline job duration; determine special equipment needed; apply best value vendors; identify bidding target; prepare bid form, proposal letter, and/or qualifications.
  • Research construction history for techniques related to job elements, productivity, value‑enhancing, value engineering, and alternative constructability.
  • Ensure “Standard Conditions” are included in every proposal and include language allowing a 50% reduction when the job is 50% complete; also attempt to secure language that allows final retentions when 60 days of completion of Baker work.
  • Package and send proposal on time; review with Operations for productivity/manpower.
  • Follow up with client personally to ensure bid receipt and identify potential obstacles in closing the deal.
  • Develop client relationships for current and future jobs.
  • Collect data on lost jobs to monitor competition and market.
  • Provide information to Marketing for commence update after bid.
  • Track project until awarded.
  • Contact Chief Estimator/Estimating Manager when award is made.
  • Set up transition meeting for Project Manager and copy pricing, quotes, and pertinent proposal information.
  • Prepare rough schedule for job duration including cash flow and man‑hour requirements.
  • Set meeting time for Project Manager and invitees.
  • Convey understanding of low‑qualified vendors/subs and commitments to subs and General Contractor’s.
  • Provide overview of job and proposal to Project Manager and operations support.
  • Communicate General Contractor’s/owner’s schedule and needs with field supervision.
  • Review potential operations alternatives.
  • Price changes within necessary timeframe.
  • Assist project team in receiving approval within 60 days of submittals.
  • Track project until awarded.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, accounting or related field from an accredited college or university and 3 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proficiency in estimating software such as Timberline, UScost, Win Est.

  • Write reports, business correspondence, and procedures.
  • Present information effectively and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Good listening skills.
  • Apply mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; calculate area and volume using fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Interface with clients and co‑workers.
  • Define problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Factor safety and OSHA requirements into estimates.
