Work in this class is a senior management professional position responsible for administration and oversight of the Rockingham County Public Health Dental Program including the dental clinic and Mobile Dental Unit (MDU). The employee supervises all dental program clinical and administrative staff, ensures quality patient care services, manages program operations, participates in departmental leadership activities, and provides direct dental treatment to patients.
This position serves as the principal dental consultant to the Health Department and reports directly to the Local Health Director.

Examples of Duties- Provides clinical dental treatment including examinations, preventive services, restorative procedures, extractions, dental surgeries, endodontic procedures, dentures, crowns, and other appropriate dental services.
- Provides diagnosis and dental education to patients.
- Evaluates dental conditions and radiographs, concludes diagnosis, and provides related health information to patients and communicates with specialists.
- Maintains records of dental patients and treatment by writing notes and evaluating health history records.
- Performs administrative work by preparing budget, attending administrative meetings, and collaborating with the Health Director and Health Educator.
- Keeps track of dental codes and insurances. Works with IT for various software needs.
- Evaluates financials of dental, revenues, run and analyze reports, monitor expenses, authorizes, and recommends purchasing of products, supplies, and equipment.
- Oversees program operations including scheduling, workflow, supply and equipment management, and operational coordination for the dental clinic and Mobile Dental Unit.
- Monitors dental program productivity and performance by reviewing service utilization, financial reports, and program outcomes to ensure efficient and effective delivery of dental services.
- Provides supervision and leadership to dental clinical and administrative staff including dental hygienists, dental assistants, and support personnel.
- Provides direct clinical and administrative supervision to Dentist I and Dentist II staff, including guidance on complex treatment planning, coordination of clinical services, monitoring productivity, and evaluating performance to ensure effective delivery of public health dental services.
- Comprehensive knowledge of County and Department policies and procedures.
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable local and State laws, rules, and regulations.
- Thorough knowledge of the equipment, instruments, practices, and procedures utilized in a general dentistry practice.
- Thorough knowledge of preparing reports and other types of correspondence.
- Thorough knowledge of the use of standard office equipment and associated software
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships, medical officials, patients, and associates.
