Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Center for Student Success is responsible to the Director of Undergraduate Programs and the Associate Dean of the College of Business for the design, coordination, and implementation of effective academic advising and career services programs for the College of Business. Academic advising/counseling is defined as providing effective interpersonal guidance, information, and assistance in identifying, developing, and implementing strategies supportive of individual academic and career goals.

Each Assistant Director works as a member of the Center for Student Success team (comprised of other Assistant Directors) to provide academic advising to students pursuing any one of six concentrations and/or the minor in business administration.

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of each Assistant Director position is to provide individual academic counseling to students on academic matters, such as the selection of a concentration, course selection, and academic performance. The Assistant Director guides students in development of decision-making skills and provides instruction through intervention workshops. The Assistant Director creates programs, workshops, and other initiatives to enhance students' academic performance from both proactive and intervention perspectives.

The Assistant Director coordinates the academic orientation of new students/and or new concentrations and supports the university's goals through developing and implementing a student development approach to academic advising.

The Assistant Director makes personal contact with students; provides a positive environment which assists students in their personal and academic growth and development; discusses with and assists students in selecting appropriate courses; provides initial guidance about proper procedures for the completion and processing of all necessary academic forms and use of electronic advising resources; refers students to appropriate university units, learning resources, and personnel;

obtains and supplies students with supportive technical information; discusses class progress, goals, and utilization of learning resources, and holds regular meeting with students who are in academic difficulty.

The Assistant Director maintains organized and current records, which document individual student progress. The Assistant Director is responsible for making sure all entering students are trained to use Degree Works to enable students to have more ownership of their academic plan. The Assistant Director monitors students identified as academically at risk and participates in the development and implementation of the intervention efforts of the College.
