Interprofessional Nurse Educator

Responsibilities Instruction (85%)
  • Facilitate and co‑debrief interdisciplinary simulation sessions using established standards of best practice in healthcare simulation.
  • Participate in simulation scenarios as an embedded nursing professional to provide authentic interprofessional learning experiences that reflect real‑world clinical practice.
  • Model compassionate, patient‑centered nursing care and professional communication.
  • Teach team‑based roles and responsibilities from a nursing perspective, including participation in BLS and ACLS resuscitation.
  • Teach and demonstrate nursing procedural skills to medical students and residents within the nursing scope of practice, including:
    • Peripheral IV insertion (including ultrasound‑guided techniques, as appropriate)
    • Ankle‑brachial indexes (ABIs)
    • Safe medication preparation and administration principles
  • Teach the nursing approach to initial patient assessment as performed in clinical practice, including:
    • Obtaining vital signs, chief complaint, and relevant nursing history
    • Performing focused physical and mental health assessments
    • Communicating assessment findings effectively to the interprofessional care team
    • Educating learners on nursing considerations related to medication administration in acute and emergency care settings, including indications, safety checks, monitoring, and adverse effects.
    • Teaching the appropriate and safe use of commonly used nursing equipment, including IV pumps, monitors, defibrillators, and other bedside technology, in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Collaborate with interprofessional and interdisciplinary faculty to deliver simulation scenarios to promote student learning, critical thinking, and clinical decision making.
  • Promote simulation best practices and initiatives established by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL).
Administration (10%)
  • Assist simulation team in ensuring correct medical supplies are available for use during scenarios.
  • Create mock medications, IVS, and assist with moulage to create realism.
  • Attend planning meetings for classes and staff meetings.
  • Review scenario case template and facilitator documents.
  • Attend dry‑runs of scenarios in person or virtually, depending on date of dry‑run.
  • Attend simulation training sessions through the Office of Clinical Simulation.
  • Travel to regional locations to promote the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit capabilities and programs.
  • Facilitate sessions associated with programs associated with the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit at regional sites and external customers at the Brody School of Medicine Simulation Center.
Licensing and Educational Requirements
  • Must hold an active Registered Nurse North Carolina license and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in a critical care setting (e.g., emergency department, intensive care unit), or associate’s degree with seven (7) years of experience in a critical area setting.
  • Eligibility for AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, BLS instructor certification, and successful instructor alignment with ECU Health Center for Learning and Performance.
  • Preferred certifications:
    Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) from SSH; ACLS and PALs certifications.
Preferred Experience , Skills, Training/Education
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Adult Educational theory, methodologies, and delivery.
  • Knowledge of fundamentals of care across the lifespan (pediatric, adult, OB, geriatric).
  • Experience teaching using simulation‑based education.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a track record of scholarly dissemination in presentation and publication form.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Interpersonal, collaborative, negotiation, team‑building, and communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
