Position Summary:
The Nursing Assistant performs specific responsibilities under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. Functions within the framework of the NAI listing granted by the NC Department of Health and Human Services and adheres to the philosophy and goals of patient care services. In addition, the Nursing Assistant may be utilized in the Observer Role responsible for monitoring one or more assigned patients on a designated unit for a specified time period.

Education:
attends and utilizes staff development programs and educational resources, fulfills annual mandatory educational requirements, and assists in the orientation of new staff and students as delegated by the supervising RN. - Follows hospital and unit‑based policies and procedures: provides quality patient care, stays familiar with job duties and legal implications, and maintains an active NAI licensure/certification.
- Builds interpersonal relations and communication: listens to ideas, opinions and feelings of others, gives and receives constructive feedback, recognizes potential conflicts that could interfere with patient care or team relationships, works effectively in a team environment, demonstrates respectful behaviors, and seeks help when needed.
- Makes unit, department and hospital contributions: participates in unit goal setting and assists in cost‑effective use of equipment and supplies.
- Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, assists with direct patient care and completes delegated skills and tasks as prescribed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
- Monitors the patient for signs of escalating behaviors, alerts the nurse if the patient exhibits a risk of harming self or others, maintains the required level of observation per the patient’s plan of care, communicates effectively with the care team, documents accurately in the medical record, provides hazard surveillance, and engages patients in distraction activities as needed.
- High School or GED is preferred—or higher.
- NAI listing with the NC Department of Health and Human Services is required.
- Current American Heart Association Heart Saver or higher certification is required.
- De‑escalation training (Non‑violent crisis intervention or other de‑escalation program adopted by ECU Health). If not current at the time of hire, must complete within 90 days and maintain certification without lapse during employment. This is not required for ambulatory clinical positions.
